Chinese wasabi?

We were on our way home from Comdex and stopped off to grab dinner. While we were eating, this Caucasian lady was sitting behind us eating her food and educating her child on the food (like she's an expert) that they were having. She told her child that wasabi is made from Chinese horse-radishes while eating her California Roll. I don't know about her but I've never had wasabi with my Chinese food before.

Maybe she thinks all Asians are Chinese and know Kung Fu, as well.

EDIT: We all knew it was Japanese and that Chinese wasabi didn't exist. Maybe this "Chinese wasabi" can be eaten with chicken fried rice.

she doesn't know what she's talking about. japanese wasabi is made from a special plant and no the chinese has no wasabi.

you're wrong, japan a lot of their wasabi from taiwan. In fact on top of a very famous mountain in taiwan you can get very very fresh wasabi. Wasabi is not used in chinese cuisine a lot but it is used. Cold cucumbers with dried shrimp sometimes is mixed with wasabi, sesame oil, and soy sauce.

but the afterfeeling of wasabi's GREAT...it feels like fire going up your nose, up your head, down the back of your head....

handfull of wasabi inside coke is insane...

wasabi is horse radish. But i don't know if it's asian horse radish. But i wouldn't be surprised if it is. If it's not asian horseradish, then how did the Japanese get the horseradish?

It's not like the Japanese are known for traveling the world for spices. They did overtake Korea and try and take China.

yeep sir. wasabi is also used in several chinese dishes. so im not sure wasabi is japanese at all. probably seems more japanese though, since a lot of japense foods have it.

i love wasabi with my sashimi.

Not according to this. They say most of what we eat as "wasabi" is just horse-radish with coloring. The real wasabi is rare and difficult to grow.

You obviously missed my point. So what you're saying is, you associate wasabi with Taiwanese cuisine just because you think Japan gets it from Taiwan? When someone says 'wasabi', do you think Taiwan?

my sister had a Korean friend over once. My great aunt also was here, and asked "Are you from Mongolia?" When the girls responded that she was from Korea, my ga responded "Oh . . . is that a part of Mongolia?" And so on and so forth. The word mongolia must have been used 8000 times. I'm surprised she didn't fixate on China and Japan, though.

wasabi is definitely Japanese. Doesn't mean other groups can't use or eat it, however most 'wasabi' is not real wasabi and just horseradish and spices....close but not exact.

is it just me or from what you described, did the lady never say that wasabi was chinese? she said it was made from chinese horshradishes....

i mean if you think that implies that wasabi is chinese, then you must also think hawaiian style pizza is canadian, because hey, it's made in part from canadian bacon!
