I'm betting that most other Americans and world citizens feel this way.

Ah yes, an egoist.

But...but...It's ALL about MEEEEEEEEEEE!

In order to survive, these detestable violations of basic human rights occur.

Has it ever occurred to you that thousands upon thousands of children die every day from completely preventable diseases that arise out of malnutrition? As poor the conditions and low the pay, at least these kids are getting food to eat. China's getting a bad rap for poor quality products but has it ever occurred to you that Wal-Marts demands for cheaper and cheaper products forced these manufacturers to try and cut costs however they can? The end result is that they have to find sources of cheaper labor and cheaper materials; thus human trafficking, child labor and lead paint become part of the manufacturing process. We as consumers are just as complicit in these violations as the manufacturers and the likes of Wal-Mart.

For every "Made in the USA" product, where do the materials come from? There is a good chance that they are from China and simply assembled in the USA. Instead of boycotting China, which is utterly meaningless in the grand scheme of things, why not donate your money to charity whose mission is to help those children living in an environment that perpetuates this vicious cycle?

yes blame walmart instead of these specific greedy manufacturers who are hiring child laborers in order to make more money. Everyone just blames walmart. just like everyone who calls for boycotting china. blame walmart, boycot china, blame walmart boycott china, blame walmart, boycott china. blah.

walmart is forcing me to use slave child labor in order to get by. boohoo... yeah right :disgust:

My point was that people are over simplifying the problem by saying that these Chinese manufacturers are the sole parties to blame and that we all, to a certain degree, have a hand in this.

My rule of thumb has always been that I will never condemn someone else for doing something that I would have done if I was in the same situation. Let's say your the owner of one of these plants producing plastic toys in China and that you'll have to hire child labor and use cheaper materials in order to meet Wal-Mart's price demands. Can you honestly say that you will not do so on moral grounds and forfeit your entire business? Pragmatically speaking, if you don't do it, someone else will and does that really make the situation any better? Wal-Mart does not care who they do business with as long as they can provide the products they want at the prices they want. Can you honestly say that you will risk the well-being of your family just to make a statement? If you can, more power to you. These people are just trying to provide for their families. It's not as if they're the devil reincarnate.

Get off your high horse and look around you, stuff like this happens all the time and you guys are acting surprised and *gasp* outraged? Give me a break.

There are other ways to feed his family that doesn't require child slave labor. Nobody is holding a gun to their head and saying "turn these kids into slaves or we'll shoot you and family"

Given the choice of being maybe twice as rich, I'm sure many people would chose to use child labor if there weren't any consequences. Look at the US in the late 19th century. People attribute all of China's problems to the fact that they are "communist", but this horrible exploitation is a product of rampant capitalism.

Wow.... people like you are why things like slavery still exist in the world. Cuz you turn the cheek and say who are we to judge. Are you Chinese? Cuz i've seen this from many chinese time and time again. You sound just like that chinese guy in the P&N who asked wouldn't we be lining up for human bodyparts of prisoners they execute in China. Hell no.

There's something wrong with your lack of morals.

If I had a business and Company A did that to me, then I would look for other companies to manufacture from. Then if Company A went with another manufacturer that employed slave labor I would expose them to the world. It would hurt their image more. And its illegal.

It's called being pragmatic. If Wal-Mart won't pay your asking price for your products, you think Target will? If you actually read the article, you will know that the children are still being paid, as little as it is. It's called sensational journalism. I never said the practice was okay or right. I simply said that if you compare it to the malnourished and dying children in Africa, at least these kids get a roof over their heads and food to eat.

It's easy for you say that you'll be the whistleblower to the way things work but if you were actually there and your family and business relied on a symbiotic relationship with the government and your peers, I'd like to see stand up for what is right. Good luck with continuing your business. So what if Nike took a PR hit for its use of child labor in South east asia a few years back? Did you stop buying their products? You honestly think conditions are any better? The people who are enduring those harsh conditions are simply doing what has to be done to put food on the table.

I'm a third generation American born Chinese. I've been to China once my whole life. I'll be the first to tell you that China has a lot of problems and this is certainly one of them but to get your panties all up in a bunch over this article simply shows how naive you are to cruel realities of this world. There are children in much worse situations out there and it easy for you to sit in front of your computer typing indignantly on their behalf but guess what, that still doesn't put food in their mouths or a roof over their heads. I challenge you to put your money where your mouth is and donate your next paycheck to charity working to feed starving children.

If you're that much of a bleeding-heart, you can donate YOUR paycheck if you choose. Myself, I don't do business (that I'm aware of) with companies that are involved in the child labor rackets, nor do I feel any obligation to spend my money to help the underprivileged in the world. They are NOT my problem.
HOWEVER, I still refuse to to any business with Chinese companies if I have any other choice. Between their child-slave-labor and their forced prison labor, both of which I find detestable, PLUS the shoddy business practices and crappy product quality, I feel my dollars are better spent elsewhere.
Fuck em all...boycott Chinese products where you can!

Boycott Bejing 2008!

This is one of the problems with not eating vegetables; I never visit my store's produce section. If I'd have known they sold children alongside cabbages, my roof wouldn't still need to be reshingled.

Gee, this coming from a country that would kill you for your organs?
What the heck DID you expect from China.
Oh, the good news?
If we keep shipping our economy over there they can then become the worlds leading power!
