i suppose so. but China's modern culture is also vamping up as the government becomes more liberal. Chinese cinema and literature are all blooming as western investors are more willing to pour money into projects.

That may be true, but back to the topic at hand: compared to Japanese crazies, Chinese modern-day culture can't hold a candle.

That much is true. There are some weird ass sh1t coming out of Japan

Culture - Japanese hands down? Japan may be a bit on the crazy side, but that's what makes it so good. Chinese doesn't have much of a culture, besides copying and being overly practical. That said, I'm chinese myself.
Language - Given that Japanese came from Chinese, I'd say Chinese.
Food - Each have their ups and downs. I think chinese would still win given that they have A LOT more kinds of food.
Landscape - China
Business Opportunities - Depends on the business obviously. High tech and research, japan. Mass manufacturing of cheap parts, China.
Relation with the US - This should be obvious, Japan.
History - Can't say I know enough about both to make a good judgement, but China definitely has more history, and more influential history at that.
Personal Experiences in China or Japan..

Chinese doesn't have much of a culture? What What What What? 5,000 years doesn't count or are you counting the last century?

uh... are you really chinese?
cuz if you were you would realize that a lot of japanese culture is taken from china and that chinese culture is quite rich (although i'll agree that current japanese culture is a lot more crazy)

Culture: Equal.
Language: Japanese. Whenever I hear chinese, it seems like they're yelling at one another.
Food: Japanese by a slight margin.
Landscape.. I can't really say since i've never been to either place.

I think Cantonese can sound like whining and yelling but Mandarin sounds pretty good to me.

me <---- Cantonese

All (East) Asian culture are modeled after the Chinese.

China is origin of all Asian culture. If you are Korean or Japanese, you are considered highly educated if you know a lot of Chinese characters.

Well the chinese restaurants I visit are mandarin owned and operated. And they sound like they're yelling and what not..

Cantonese on the other hand doesn't sound that way to me. Several friends are cantonese.

I think that I prefer Japanese, I have some issues with every Chinese that I know, actually just 3, but I have no issues with 2 Japanese that I know. I think that Chinese people don?t like occidentals or just they don?t like me? I know that is a generalization, but that is the reason that I prefer Japanese.

Chinese food >> Japanese Food.

Which are better...take into account:
Culture: They both have a lot of culture... Given that MOST of us here are europena, canadian, or american we could care less about 5000 years of history, we have to some silly degree, so do they. The difference, we grew, China hasn't. Their government is one of the largest human rights offenders in the world.
Language: both use funny characters, japan has something like 3 silly alphabets. its a tie.
Food: Japan... its all good no matter where you are in the country... Northern chinese food is poopoo.
Landscape: This has to be a tie, both have beautiful landscapes, if you think otherwise you must have never been to okinawa or misawa or even the Mt Fuji area. Take into account that Japan is MUCH smaller than china yet still has many different climates and features.
Business Opportunities: Japan has a developed excellent economy, China's is still growning and largely state controlled... (look who owns a lot of the 5 star hotels... hello Peoples Army).
Relation with the US: This is Japan by a landslide. We have almost as good relations with japan now as we have with England.
History: See the culture note above.... both have rich histories into the far past. Both have had major human rights abuses... the difference... japan has changed.
Personal Experiences in China or Japan: I've been TDY to both countries and far prefer japan... Hello Aki 🙂 (electric town FTW!)
...and whatever else you can think of

Japan!

This is an inner conflict since I have both of these as a part of my ethnicity. 😛

I have to say that I like virtualgames0's reply.

Culture: Modern day culture goes to Japan. But traditional and culture that has made significant impacts throughout thousands of years of history goes to China by FAR. Look at all the culture that has flourished and come from China-- read history books, chinese philosophy, chinese novels, celebrations, the arts, so many uniquely chinese things. We don't tend to be aware of them because we live in the west-- with shakespeare etc. But China has had so much in the way of culture. As for modern day culture, Japan has it. Jpop, anime, video games, etc.

Language- ....how do you compare this? I guess you can say how language SOUNDS. In that case, my pick would be for Chinese, mandarin specifically. Its quite sing-songy and not rough at all. That being said, some chinese dialects are quite abrasive as well.

Food: Chinese, due to variety. I like sushi though.

Landscape: China, hands down. This is the category China wins the most in imo. Wide variety of geological/ecological features.

Business Opportunities: Right now, China. Huge expanding industry/market. Many untapped markets. Japan is undergoing a very long 'recession'

Relation with the US: Japan. for obvious reasons.

History: China, for reasons mentioned above.

I hate the mandarin language. I hate the writing.

Practicality>some craptastic lines thrown all over the place.

note I'm taking chinese and am chinese. 2 1/2 generation technically so I'm white. Gimme a break.

Japan is much more appealing than China.

Not to mention the Japanese language sounds way better than any Chinese language.
