Chinese on English OS (XP)

Hey folks,

Scenario: I'm running XP, the English version. I have installed the various languages for Chinese and have tried setting up Lingoware for ICQ. The Lingoware licenses are written in Chinese, which my OS cannot display correctly - probably because it does not have the particular font it's looking for. Therefore I have trouble agreeing to much 😛.

Problem: When transfering files with a Chinese name, it does not transfer with the correct characters, but rather puts garbage in the character's spot.

Anyway, does anyone here use Chinese on the English OS? I'm actually in Hong Kong, so I've asked a lot of people. However, it's hard to beat the quality of support offered through the Anandtech community, and most of them have the Chinese version of XP installed, which I don't. I am trying to avoid installing the Chinese XP, but I am willing to consider it if it is the only option.

Thanks!

English Windows XP does not, by default, display chinese file names as characters, but rather as the DBCS code. Nor does it always do well on a program that hardcodes dialogues in BIG5 format.

Have you installed the Far East Asian Language Pack?

For maximum support short of installing Chinese Windows XP (which can be a pain, I know), you need to set the default local to Chinese TW, set the Inputs to default Chinese HK and a few other things, but even that's not perfect.

I suggest installing NJStar CJK Viewer....it really comes in handy for times like these.

BTW, Why aren't you watching the rugby? It's damn noisy from up here near the stadium....😛

Woah - I started a post where the FAQ man was doing something besides FAQing me - haha - so strange la~.

I should have mentioned that I did install the East Asian Language pack, but as you mentioned, it only does so much....

Do you/anyone know of a good "plug-in" that I could try that cost less than $50? Since it costs that much, it probably works the best, but it's quite a price tag given I directly paid $15 for the student license to XP....

This gets even more complex if I consider using drivers for Linux to access the NTFS partitions... or does it? aiy yai yai.

Did you try setting all advanced options as chinese in regional settings? you should select chinese as the default language for non-unicode programs & check on all types of different chinese characters for the code conversion table (in the advanced tab). I have no problems installing korean and japanese programs but I have yet to try chinese programs.
