Chinese Manufacturers Take Another Hit

TOKYO (Reuters) - Chinese merchandise took a fresh knock Friday when car maker Nissan said it was recalling tens of thousands of mugs it gave away in Japan because the paint contains excessive lead.

It said it took the action after a hapless car-shopper fell ill after drinking from one of the mugs and complained.

Nissan Motor said the cups, which it was giving to anyone who test-drove one of its cars in Japan during a sales initiative that started on August 16, had a lead content that was more than 30 percent above the permissible level.

Japan's third-biggest carmaker said it would recall the mugs, which it said could have reached as many as 87,000 potential customers. It did not know the identity of the manufacturer in China.

Chinese products have come under intense scrutiny over safety concerns in recent months, prompting recalls of products from toys and toothpaste to seafood and tires.

The Chinese are sure getting hammered lately..

Question is why is everything that is painted from China full of lead? 😕
Lead based paint is cheaper to manufacture than alternatives. Domestic products in China use it and some of it makes its way into the export market through mistakes, corruption, and other ways.

Yes, welcome to P&N

Do you have any other comment other than "China is getting hammered lately?"

Do you enjoy lead in your products from China?

Show me the link then if it's a repost. Nope. I don't have another comment. I just posted for informational purposes not to start an argument with someone as smart as yourself 😉 And no, I don't like lead in my products. I do my best to buy locally made products.

Cdubneeddeal, thanks for the post, I have long viewed ceramic products from China with more than a little fear because of the potential for lead contamination, particularly with high acidic content drinks, for instance, it's never a good idea to drink OJ out of a ceramic mug, particularly one that doesn't have the country of origin somewhere on it.

Because it is cheap. Very cheap.

and who fostered this environment of bringing in cheap product from China?

To answer that you'd probably have to know who the president was that granted full Diplomatic and trade relations to China.

Here's a hint: peanuts and Georgia

Bush & the Republicans?

I can't say.

However I can ask, why didn't Bush & the Republicans protect the citizens from poison and danger?

But is Nissan a Chinese Company?

Is Mattel a Chinese Company?

So? That was how many decades ago?

What was wrong with the current President that he couldn't step up and protect U.S. Citizens from such an apparent dangerous decision by a Democrat decades ago?

Well...duh, Dave. If he did that how else could he have mugs loaded with dangerously high levels of lead paint distributed to unsuspecting Japanese test drivers?

Jeez, awful defensive. Wasn't it Nixon who opened up trade/diplomacy with China?
Nope. Nixon made the first effort at normalizing relations. Carter opened up the trade. I remember it well when it all happened. Many people on both sides of the political ailse were not happy about it. Not long after is when all the "Made in the USA" chanting began.

Oh. I actually went and read what was on Wikipedia about this before making my first post, but I couldn't find anything definitive about Clinton like you said, so I made my first post based on what I could remember about trade with China. Thanks for the info.

They deserve every bit of the hammering they get and more. They need to keep their poisonous tchotchke crap to themselves.

More than 30%? So basically nonexistent. I cannot imagine that this made the customer sick.

Anyway, must suck to live in China. I bet they eat lead on their cereal.

My pleasure.

btw. Maybe it was just a typo, or a Freudian slip 😉 , but just to clarify I actually said Carter, not Clinton.
