Chinese government official suggests Foxconn employees unionize

On Saturday the top Communist Party official of Guangdong, Wang Yang demanded Foxconn clean up its act, arguing that improved unions could help the situation. Yang, provincial party secretary, comments, "[The government and Hon Hai must] work together and take effective measures to prevent similar tragedies from happening again. Labor unions in private firms should be improved to facilitate better working conditions and more harmonious relations between workers and employers."

Foxconn reportedly has been making employees work long overtime, sometimes unpaid. Even as it made record profits, it also failed to give employees a promised raise in recent months, as well (entry level employees currently make around $132 a month). There's even reports of company security details beating and harassing workers.

And thus it begins. No cheap labor for you!

Foxconn by no mean is the perfect employer, but what the heck do you expect from working for low-skilled, large scale manufacturing plant making money through cheap labor and economies of scale. Sorry to hand the truth to you, if you want to work in a fancy office, drive nice car and meet pretty money hungry girls in China, you gotta have fancy degree with nice family background.

Bunch of those suicides, along with all those nut cases killing young kids in school are driven by f'ed up communist system with no social equality or justice. Rather than blaming someone kind enough to give China 400,000+ jobs, those official should look at themselves and ask what have they done for the Chinese people and society lately.

The states already has, and lost. China holds so much of the US debt it's ridiculous.

The USA is so highly leveraged in their loans, that if China called the land that the USA has put up as collateral, they could claim the entire USA and some more.

That guy is in no position to speak like that. I'm sure he'll retract his statement soon. In truth, only one union is allowed to exist in China and it is controlled by the communist party. Also, the communist party would prefer that people have jobs rather than rights. Jobs can always go to Vietnam or Cambodia...

A union in China i snot the same as a union in the USA. Ironically the USA is kinder to unions than China is. Some folks might have to order a secret decoder ring to interpret a sentence like this:

The keyword is harmonious. What this means is "we don't give a shit about what happens to anyone working for any company as long as it does not bring public embarrassment to the Chinese government. You two kiss and make up and don't show up in the headlines any more, kapish?"

There is NO way that the Chinese government is going to push for any organization of their labor force that will lead to generally higher wages in the economy as a whole. Not from the supply side of the labor market, that is.
