What did they put in it that corrodes metal ? I though they just kept out the additive that prevents mold growth.

Drywall with chemical additives
Children's toys with lead paint
Dog food, toothpaste, milk and children's formula tainted with melamine

What other kinds of poisons/toxins are in the products shipped to us from China?

Time to stop importing crap from there until they clean up their act...and a good reason to invest in US industry.

Buy American when and where you can...and soon enough, there will be MORE American made products.

I agree they are just producing crap time after time, but the demand for cheap products remain, just like the demand for cheap labor and the Mexicans' presence. This will be an issue for a long time ... "buy american" won't help homeowners decide against the cheapest contractor who will use the cheapest products. What about all the baby products out there... I have infants and I'll be honest, I'm not screening them for "Made in China"... I don't know how many even made aren't made there.

If American products cost more, well you see where this is headed... do you expect everyone to pay premiums over this? There will always be a demand for cheaper stuff which American workers can't / don't want to produce (unions anyone?)

By the way, this awesome yet cheaply priced Logitech mouse in my hand... made in China. Which of you want to work for pennies to make these for us?

That is great, I agree. The problem here is that the American public wants it cheaper at all cost. They want to bitch that Dell outsources their tech to India. They want to bitch if Wal-Mart sells something more expensive than Target. The problem is that greedy Americans want something as cheap as possible, but don't want to pay for the labor involved in manufacturing. So retail places have to resort to imported goods to keep the cost cheap and to compete with other retailers.

It?s a slippery slope that we the consumer started. We want our $400 laptop and cheap products. Unfortunately, you can?t get that with the current minimum wage American employee, so they outsource it. But then we get upset when it?s made on the cheap using tainted parts and slave labor. What is a company supposed to do??

Pretty much American corporations don't give a shit about you or me and they put a ton of pressure on these subcontractors to reduce costs. However, many times there's very little end-to-end quality control so they don't inspect the materials that they use the assemble the goods in the factories.

iirc, the reason we started importing chinese drywall is not cost, it was that there wasn't enough capacity in the US to satisfy the demand for drywall following hurricane katrina and rita.

Good point. I noticed the price of wood went up a bit after Katrina. I believe the reasoning was that New Orleans was/is a big import area for woods and such. I saw some video footage that showed piles of lumber that had come in by ship just scattered about everywhere.

IIRC the gypsum was actually a byproduct of their mining industry. Its first use was a scavenging agent used to pull toxins from coal. They dried the slurries and provided sheetrock manufacturing with a cheaper supply of gypsum. Problem is the efficiency of adsorbtion of gypsum works both ways so it tends to give back what it takes in the form of very corrosive fumes. Judging by the smells and hostile corrosive reactions with metals containing copper and silver it's predominately compounds bearing sulfur. Very dicey indeed! :Q
