I like MSG. It adds flavor.
Sue me.

Same. But I can understand how someone wouldn't like it if it gave them headaches...

its just that you dont realize how many things have MSG in them. foods you wouldnt even think of. it sucks to have to watch what you eat ALL the time :(

In its purest form, it tastes sweet :)

it doesn't taste sweet

the taste is distinct from the regular 5 tastes. though i think cantonese ppl call it "sweet"..

Savory is the word you are looking for.

Savory is the word you are looking for.

but the word savory is not defined very clearly:

example, from marriam-webster

savory:

having savor : as a : piquantly pleasant to the mind <a savory collection of essays> b : morally exemplary : EDIFYING <his reputation was anything but savory> c : pleasing to the sense of taste especially by reason of effective seasoning

savor:

1 : the taste or smell of something
2 : a particular flavor or smell
3 : a distinctive quality

none of them give you a clear idea that "savory" is a taste distinct from the rest of the common 5 senses of taste

Seriously, it could just be a psychological thing. Doritos, KFC, tv dinners, canned soup, among many other foods all have probably as much if not more MSG than a lot of chinese food. When you order it say no MSG and they'll probably eliminate or at least reduce the amount. Also, don't order from crappy chinese-american places, they tend to mask their poor cooking skills with adding msg lol

Nothing... it's a NATURAL fish extract.

The friggin lard that they cook in for americanized chinese food will kill you a lot faster.

Ever had miso soup? Pure MSG. How come Japanese people die of colon cancer from pickled foods more than MSG? They also happen to be the longest living people on the planet despite smoking next to their babies. *shrug*

Panda Express uses no MSG.
