I like dogs, but the truth is that a dog is no better than a pig in the grand scheme of things.

They're not typically any smarter than a pig, they're just more expressive.

We like to keep them as pets because they don't taste as good as pork and we can interpret their vocalizations and body language better. This might make them more "fit" to hang out with humans from our perspective, but it doesn't make them any better than the animals that we regularly consume.

OTOH I couldn't kill a dog in cold blood. I would almost feel like I was killing a person because I would be able to recognize and identify with their cries of pain so well. I certainly couldn't BEAT a dog to death.

This makes me something of a hypocrite because I've killed deer and wild hogs without a second thought. While I believe that these animals have as much worth as any pet dog, I would not be able to do the same thing to the dog. It's a paradox I suppose...

in other news, zookeepers are feeding lions frozen blood popcicles to combat the heat... isn't that cute?

That's a nasty way to do it.

I don't know what that area was like, but some of the third world countries I've been to seem to have packs of dogs everywhere. I can understand the "Why they did it", but I don't think it's really the right response. Seems like an act of desperation to me.

Explain to me what's the fvcking difference?

Did Moses come down from Mount Sinai and decree that "Pigs and chickens shalt thou eat, but dogs are a strict no-no, being companion animals and thus more valuable than your children"?

No. The difference is only in your admittedly small mind. GET OVER YOURSELF AND YOUR PATHETIC NARROW-MINDED PERSPECTIVE.

OK, maybe I overreacted, but damn it's annoying to see how people on this board seem to elevate pets to the status of gods and yet don't care about any human being in the world who makes less than 5 figures. For once in your life realize that there are billions upon billions of human beings who don't have nearly as cushy a life as your stupid pet, and you can hardly expect them to treat their pets better than themselves.

By the way, what state is "Chinese County" in? I've never heard of it😕

I agree this is absolutely horrible, being a dog owner myself, but PETA is stupid..
The killings prompted calls for a boycott of Chinese products from the activist group People For the Ethical Treatment of Animals. ?We are urging everyone to actively boycott ? not a word we use lightly ? anything from China"

There goes.... virtually everything?

No more pie!!!

Well, in the case of the dog being somebody's pet, then this is somewhat disturbing because of the dog's sentimental value to the owner. Though I do think that the dog itself is worthy of no more sympathy than any other animals.

dogs have been evolved by humans to become our companions. they are intelligent social animals and we've exploited/molded them for this quality. so its not really the same as a chicken.

I don't think most of the people who posted in the thread actually looked at the article. These dogs were clubbed to death as a reaction to a couple rabies cases, and not for food. The government failed to control rabies in the first place, and executed an extremely crude, inhumane solution to preventing more cases.
