Ford Agrees Volvo sale to Geely

"In theory, the Chinese market could be an opportunity for Volvo,"

Equally, the deal should help Geely get into the Western market.

...much of the Volvo production to be moved to China, which recently overtook the US to become the world's largest market for cars....
Get ready to bow to your Chinese overlord.

oh shit.

i'm glad i quit working on volvos for a living.

also article title is terrible and whoever wrote it should be fired.

Isn't Geely in a unique position of being one of the only independent car companies in China? With everyone else being partially owned by the state.

So Volvo will end up turning into a budget car.
I'm not so sure that it will be a budget car or how long it will be one, but if history repeat it self; the Chinese have just as much as a chance to make an inroad as the Japanese & Korean have done.

Interesting how much xenophobic racism there is on Anandtech. I see this like Tata/Jaguar. Not a big deal, and it'll keep up the status quo.

Please explain that ridiculous comment> This has nothing to do with race. I can't speak on their cars, but their tools and atv s and dirt bikes are pieces of SH*&! I imagine their cars would follow suit.

hmmm this is the same company that made the rolls royce knockoff
http://wheels.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/04/21/a-rolls-royce-knock-off-from-china/

Has Geely even came out with anything original yet?
Most if not all of their designs are knockoff or copied, but they have made tremendous effort to right themselves after many lawsuits and international standards before they can export their cars.

Purchasing Volvo is the best way for them to clear the lawsuits, gain a mature design team, advance technologies, and the international exceptant that they yearn for.

If you think they will turn Volvo into a budget brand, then you are retarded.

Did Lenovo turn the Thinkpad into a budget brand when they bought it? Yeah, I didn't think so.

There was an interesting bit on NPR about the Chinese purchasing American companies. They want to buy the companies to see how Americans run them. They rarely change the operating methods of company and usually just stay out of the way. It may end up like Tata's purchase. Can anyone say Jags have gotten worse? I think it's quite the other way around.

That's the way Korean stuff used to be, remember the first Hyundais? They were god-awful, not just in spec, but in assembly, reliability, safety, everything pretty much.

You have to realize that as it is now, Chinese stuff is mainly crappy BECAUSE the demand is usually for absolute bottom-dollar throwaway crap. There are a lot of well-reviewed TVs that come out of China that seem to work just fine.

The Chinese are not incapable of making a good product, they will simply have to start at the bottom of the pole and work their way up.

Welcome to modern hybrid capitalism. People make shit because people buy shit. People make quality products for people that buy quality products.

Where do you think Intel's SSDs, those that have revolutionized the SSD market in quality come from? How about the iPod or iPhone?

Talking about tools, you mean the Milwaukee power tools made in Beijing next to the Caterpillar factory that manufactures parts to be assembled for the main company in Peoria, Illinois? How about the Craftsman needle nose pliers in my toolbox right now that say Made in China or much of the Dewalt tool line? Yeah real shit there. You think China crap is shit, because you only buy shit, not because China is unable to produce anything decent. It's not China's problem, it's because you choose to do so.

China can make anything of any quality specified, There's no physical reason I can't ship state of the art machinery to China and train my workforce, just ask Mercedes Beijing of GM Shanghai.

On top of that, ownership is immaterial since Volvo will in not transfer plants in the foreseeable future as Geely has already stated, Volvos will be produced in the current factories. Setting up a modern automotive factory takes years. Even if Geely wanted to transfer manufacture to an already existing factory in China, just tooling up the correct machinery and dies, assuming they start today, would cost at least $1 Billion USD and at least 180 days even on as quick a rush schedule as possible (and that's is a lowball estimate, true prices are going to be closer to $2 billion+ and 300+ days). Just like Tata/Jaguar/Land Rover, Geely/Volvo will just carry on the status quo.

Furthermore, if you didn't want to buy a car with Made in China parts, you'd no choices anyways even today. Look at any Mercedes, BMW, Audi, VW, etc, they all manufacture parts in china.

Judging from the facts, you're either ignorant or racist, you're just in denial. Take your pick...

I have given you nothing but facts in the last post, you've responded with personal attacks. Thanks for being the drama queen, come back when you grow up and learn how adults have conversations, using the actual logic processing parts of your brain.

Saying people of a certain nationality or race are universally inferior... sure sounds like racism to me.

I'm not denying your facts, I agree China can make great stuff. But from my experience the tools and atv/motorcycles are junk, and the cars from what I have read. You are being a drama queen and throwing "RACIST!!!!" around is just silly

Where did I say Chinese people are universally inferior? Oh that's right I didn't, if anything the average Asian is smarter than the average American, opps that was racist, my bad.

In your original post. you made a blanket statement about how the stuff china makes are pieces of shit, you did not say anything about the quality products produced there.

Let me put it this way, I'm not going to argue with you about perceived quality since you seem have now expressed your views more clearly now, but in the end, I'm just tired of the general attitude: China = no go. I don't really care about general attitudes to China, but it's the spread of disinformation that bothers me much more. China = quality or lack thereof. It spans the entire spectrum from McDonald's toys to Louis Vitton bags and poor experiences are not mandatory of a Chinese purchase.

Won't buy it, ever. I already avoid Chinese products whenever possible. When are people going to learn...

I should have been more clear, I have no issue with Chinese people and was only referring to my experience. Having said that you were being dramatic, not everything is about race to people, certainly not me. Seems you are way sensitive about it for whatever reason, I am luckily not like that
