China's toilets stink!...really they do!

For most people, going to the lavatory in the capital remains a bit of a hit-and-miss affair.

"Changing people's way of thinking and teaching people the proper way to keep toilets clean will develop along with the development of toilet construction here," said Beijing tourism official Peng Linhua.

"We hope that during our toilet revolution people will pay more attention on how to use the toilet properly, and how to protect toilet facilities," he said.

Most of China's public toilets are squat-style pits with no running water, toilet paper or basins to wash hands.

But city officials showed it doesn't have to be that way, taking delegates Thursday to a model restroom where visitors can not only wash their hands but watch individual televisions above each urinal while they perform their errand of nature.

China stinks in general 😉

I once walked through a factory and was wondering why it smelled like piss and then I walked by the restroom and saw why. The female janitor was using the mop from the restroom to wipe the whole factory floor. :disgust:

Try the ones on the trains in China. 😛

Don't forget it's even worse on the trains, since everything is moving and shaking. 😛

I would think it would make it easier to get the business going...even if it is hard to complete....cleanly.

Japan was largely the same way. I'm surprised you had toilets, the places I went in japan had holes in the floor.

Not when it requires a balancing act. You do NOT want to have to catch yourself if the train lurches and you start to fall in.

they have something to learn from singapore. a little caning for tossing ur chewing gum on the ground gets people in line rather quick

When I went to China (Beijing/Shanghai) in May, there were a lot of signs up that warned against spitting on the sidewalk. Also, I managed to avoid most public restrooms, and waited until I got to a nice hotel or restaurant (I was with a tour group). However, my brother will testify that at least one of the restrooms he used was at least as bad as that picture posted above.

the japanese are very clean... its in their culture. i had the misfortune of going into a washroom in hk (with urinals and toilets and all) at a train station. i gagged as soon as i walked in. :| needless to say, i held it. i heard it got much better after sars tho...
