Very weird to me how much money China spends on "looking tough and rich" when a lot of their people live in poverty.

You could say the same thing about the US.

not exactly a fair comparison. china has 3-4 times more people in poverty than the united states has people. When was the last time the united states put on some asinine parade like this?

We do asinine comparisions in other ways. We police countries. Act tough and rich and put on a show as if we have endless wealth and resources. We put on a display as if we're better than anyone else. Of course we label ourselves as a superpower but neglect many of our people who don't have basic amenities such as medicine or even a roof.

China's poverty rate was less than 10% in 2004 (according to World Bank estimates) and it's only improved since then. 10% of 1.3 billion = 130 million. USA's population = 307 million.

Please. That's because the poverty line is set by the government. The US poverty line is roughly $11,000 a year for a single adult.
The poverty line in China is roughly $160 a year. The national average income in China is about $630 a year.
If you don't live in a major city in China you are most likely dirt ass poor. The thing with China that some fail to see, is they adjust tracking statistics to make themselves look better than they really are.

$630 a year? Where did you get that average income from? GDP Per capita $5,970 (PPP), $3,259 (nominal).

For some reason, a lot of people on ATOT have a view of china as it was in the 1960s or something. It's like they have absolutely no clue, what the rest of the world is like after the end of their middle school history books.

Yeah, China has changed a lot and will continue to do so. There's a lot of way to go but more & more people are becoming educated and moving to the cities like:

Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing (cleaned up a lot for the Olympics).

Estimates show within 15-20 years, 700 million Chinese will be "middle class" status (income of $10,000 - $73,000).

Too bad the U.S. doesn't spend that level of attention and money on human rights.

Fixed. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.

You know what they say about stones and glass houses. We are fighting what could be a trillion dollar war to do the same with around a sixth of our population in poverty.

Did you seriously just quote the Bible?
