Very weird to me how much money China spends on "looking tough and rich" when a lot of their people live in poverty.

Too bad they don't spend that level of attention and money on human rights.

It gives the population a sense of pride at least... for a little anyway until they go back to the reality of working 14 hours a day, 7 days a week.

You could say the same thing about the US.

I was reading about the celebration. Every person in the stands is there by invitation only. The general population was locked out of the area during the rally and could only watch it on TV. So of like the Dem and Rep political conventions here.

not exactly a fair comparison. china has 3-4 times more people in poverty than the united states has people. When was the last time the united states put on some asinine parade like this?

The difference, however, is we can still go to the conventions and protest. No so much there.

China's poverty rate was less than 10% in 2004 (according to World Bank estimates) and it's only improved since then. 10% of 1.3 billion = 130 million. USA's population = 307 million.

I understand the Beijing and Hong Kong celebrations, but what is up with the Empire State Building in pic 38?

For some reason, a lot of people on ATOT have a view of china as it was in the 1960s or something. It's like they have absolutely no clue, what the rest of the world is like after the end of their middle school history books.

Actually yes. The homeless rate is increasing. Poverty is at 17%. This isn't including people who actually have a roof but can't make ends meet.

No, you can go to a little designated area a couple miles from the convention and protest.

how much of that 17% can't make "ends meet" because they bought $4k rims for their car. our problem is man-made poverty from mismanaged finances.
