China's Geely wants Volvo from Ford

Ah man, I'm gonna have to give you 2/10 for your joke. I see where you were trying to go with it so you get points for effort.

Geely is not a good match for Volvo. Volvo has always been known for safety while Geely and the other Chinese automakers have proven to be polar opposites. I really hope this doesn't happen.

Maybe it'll be okay? Remember when Lenovo bought off all of IBM's consumer PC/Mobile division? Their products are still top notch though. Hm...

I just want to state for the record, that no matter what happens, I will never, ever, ever buy a Chinese car.

Ever.

Until over two year ago, I was a Volvo master tech for 22 yrs and can tell you that Volvo USE to be a great little car company (made great cars that lasted forever) UNTIL '98 when Ford bought them out. After that, you could see the attitudes change within the company and trying to keep up with the competition, they then went seriously off the deep end with crazy electronics, CAN communication networking (had LOTS of problems too) and as a result, many who were previously loyal to Volvo got tired of the newer cars BS and didn't buy newer Volvos after owning one of those. The '99, '00 S80s were prime examples of seriously problematic cars and Volvo people admitted that too. Then there all the problems with their ETMs (electronic throttle modeles) which intially cost most customers about $1,100 and typically failed just outside warranty. Due to hordes of people discussing that online in the Volvo forums, eventually a class action lawsuit resulted, big recall and Volvo had to repay all those people back and fix their car for free. The latest cure I saw was merely a software update too.....fixed!

SO......could a Chinese car company really do worse?

My 94 850 was much more durable than our 2000 S70. I'm looking into getting a Volvo C30 when I get money or something. Ford buying Volvo was a good move simply because Volvo had the safety technology that Ford wanted/needed. It is sad to see that Volvo won't return to it's independent car company that it used to be. I'll always buy Volvo, and probably other manufacturers too, but my love for Volvo will not change unless I or the family encounters something bad with our current S70 or the new Volvo cars that I hope to one day own.

Btw, my S70 was not involved in the ETM recall. Though I kinda figured that out when we didn't have a tranny fix despite driving over 210k km.

Ford had nothing to do with the first gen S80.
