Shanghai Preparing for 'Human Zoo'
By Associated Press

Thu May 11, 5:13 AM

SHANGHAI, China - Shanghai is getting set to open a "human zoo."

Four Australian men will live in a glass box on a downtown mall for two weeks in June, with the public able to watch them sleeping, eating and bathing, a news report said Thursday.

The group, known as the Urban Dream Capsule, has drawn crowds with similar displays in London, Montreal, Hong Kong and other cities.

"They won't turn off the lights or pull down the curtains. They show their whole life, from getting up to going to bed," Karen Chang, the event's organizer, told the Shanghai Daily newspaper.

"People like to watch them taking a shower, so they have to shower at least two times a day," Chang said. "Of course, one can't see the key parts, because there is nontransparent glass in the bathroom."

The 650-square-foot glass capsule is to be decorated in a Shanghainese theme.

Members of the group have been taking Chinese lessons so that they can communicate with spectators, the report said. The public can send e-mail or faxes to them, or put messages on the glass.

"Interaction is a key element of the performance," Chang said.

Has anyone in Britain or Canada seen this? If someone were to propose putting some Chinese people on display in Times Square, it would create such an uproar. I can't believe this is even being planned.

Didn't we just some fool on display for a week? Ya know, the guy in the aquarium.

THis seems to be some sort of "professional act" as these peeps have done this in many places. If you're implying there's some racism here, I don't see it myself.

This is good. Take a dangerous species and put it in a zoo and eveltually all the kids will love it. Soon Chinese kids will want Westerners as pets.

Okay, so these guys are putting on a show. The problem I have is that if some Chinese actors were to decide to duplicate this stunt in NYC, the protests would be unbelievable.

Why would there be protests? What's wrong with it? It's not like they enslaved some people and locked them up in the zoo. It sounds like they're professional 'performers'.

It's been done before, in several countries.

And people like watching other people, otherwise we wouldn't have reality crap like Big Brother or Temptation Island on TV.

If they are in China wouldn't it just be called food?

Anyway, I am pretty sure I would not pay to see it, but if it was just in some park and I was in the area I might go walk around because it is just kind of weird. Obviously you have to have a little bit of a voyeur in you if you enjoy watching these people do every day things.
