China to 'boost' military spending

We dont need to tame them. Their playing technology catchup, and for the most part always will be. Especially if we get the Raptors off the production lines and onto the tarmacs, we'll be decades ahead of the Chinese in air power, our submarines are already the best the world has ever seen. Our surface fleets are probably our weakest link, but even those are very advanced as well.
Nothing to worry about really.

Officially, defense spending grew about 11 percent last year from 2003, hitting 211.7 billion yuan ($25.6 billion), according to the white paper.

By comparison, the U.S. defense budget is about $400 billion this year and Japan's is about $47 billion.

So Japan the pacifist nation has nearly double the defense budget of this "tiger" ? And we're supposed to be worried?

They're starting to protect their own hides. They are now the biggest consumer of petroleum, eh? And their recent deals with Iran are putting increased pressure on the UN Security Council to not place sanctions upon Iraq. It's already worked on the Sudan where China National Petroleum has large holdings.

that have increased military spending for something like 10 yrs now. no new news. they are building carriers bla blah balh the whole lot. still technology wise pretty far behind us.

china doesn't spend its time making threats.

You have to remember that supporting the troops (not just armor, but food and housing) is included in the budget.

Also, what about the domestic police? Are they included in the military budget? (In some countries, the police are a part of the military)

It most certainly does. The nationalistic attitude that China has cultivated within its polity has made it the only course of dialogue that is available on certain situations of international interest (e.g. Taiwan).

Anyone know what % of our national debt is held by China ?

And what would happen if they decide to cash out ?

Treasury statistics indicate that foreigners bought 58 percent of the securities that Treasury sold to investors. Some 60 percent of that 58 percent was bought by central banks. A large percentage of that went to the central banks of Japan and China. This exposes the United States to financial or political risk that either bank will stop buying Treasuries - or selling them heavily.

That's as much as I was willing to research, but it certainly does not bode well that our national debt is skyrocketing to such extremes.

China doesn't even need a Navy to be a Major thorn in the side on the global scale of things. They are a mere few days drive from the most strategically important place on Earth, the Middle East. Short of a Nuclear exchange, nothing could stop a Chinese Army from overrunning everything in their path, even the US forces stationed in Afghanistan/Iraq.

I'm not aware of there're super highways through the Hindu Kush, the Himalaya or the Myanmar jungles.

Keep up our military spending...stay ahead of them. We are still like two military tiers ahead of them, and we still spend more $ on defense than they do, by a HUGE margin.

We spend (throwaway) more money on the military than the next 10 largest militaries combined! Let's make that more than 20 combined!

I'd rather spend it on military than spend it on a bunch of deadbeats who can't (or more likely WONT) even get a job or contribute to society.

And i'd rather military spending be put into education, balanced budget and tax breaks...

I say lets draft them all into the army and use them as canon fodder in our 1st wave against the evil Chinese or the Iranian! Give them liberty (the Chinese and the Iranian) and give them dead (the deadbeats).

Don't need 'em.
