I think we're forgetting something. Taiwan is one of the biggest producers of computer hardware (especially graphics cards). WHAT WILL HAPPEN THEN?

thats right!!! let china invade taiwan and see your video card prices increase 10x. hows $500 for a geforcefx5200 sound? 😛

and i agree with digitalX, most taiwanese dont like the chinese let alone want to be ruled by them. asking for china to come take you over is like saying "please take away all my freedoms; my right to free speech, MY RIGHTS TO REPRODUCTION, life, liberty and all that stuff. and if i dont like it, run me over with a tank!" yeah... right... once people taste freedom theyd never want to give it up.

DigitalX, I think I have perhaps said before something about the Taiwanese vote for their future.

Unilateral voting would not be accepted. Even US also admit that the future of Taiwan should be decided by the people on the both sides of the strait.

I remembered a Canadian friend introduced some interesting law about the supreme court about Quebec voting. Now a new way, you firstly hold a unilateral voting, but let the congress or supreme court of mainland China decides whether it was legal or not. 🙂OK?
The difference is that Taiwan has been an independant country in all relevant respects for over 50 years, I don't view technical international recognition as significant. None of your examples cover this sort of situation. Mumble about how its unilateral all you want, its about about one country, China medling in the sovereign affairs of the country of Taiwan.

China is prepared to use nuclear weapons against the US if it is attacked by Washington during a confrontation over Taiwan, a Chinese general said on Thursday.

?If the Americans draw their missiles and position-guided ammunition on to the target zone on China's territory, I think we will have to respond with nuclear weapons,? said General Zhu Chenghu.

?We . . . will prepare ourselves for the destruction of all of the cities east of Xian. Of course the Americans will have to be prepared that hundreds . . . of cities will be destroyed by the Chinese.?

I thought I heard that China will also invade Romania for some undisclosed reasons 😛

This statement by "China" was by some hothead General who is probably now without a job. The Chinese foreign ministry dismissed what he said and claimed they were looking into it.

Speaking of selling the Phalcon early warning system to China, I though we had blocked Israel from doing so as it was jointly made by US and Israel. So I'm not too sure about that.

But I know that Israel has sold the Phalcon system to India.

The new Chinese fighter jet is very closely resembled to the Lavi, which is a Israeli fighter.

maybe its only in design, but very curious indeed

nonetheless, we must protect these nations

If you're talking about their "J-10", yeah I remember reading several articles (one from Jane's) all but confirming ties to Lavi, which was based on the F-16. And yeah we did block the Phalcon sale, but I think it was because the Pentagon finally got p*ssed off by the quality and quantity of arms transaction between Israel and China. Also the fact that AWACS are crucial to air superiority...

btw, bit off-topic, but does Israel have nukes? I seem to remember they are not in the club officially...

Mutual-Assured Destruction -- it's what kept everyone in check through the cold war. Does the policy apply with China? I don't have the answer to that. Can we completely annihilate each other? I don't know there, either. I don't like strong talk from either side, but sometimes it's just a way for someone to flex their muscles. Remember Nikita Khrushchev, banging his shoe, "We will destroy you!" ??

(edit for spelling)

Right now we can definately do that to China, but they can't do it to US in return, they can merely hurt us.

On a nuclear lever, economically, thats another story. The US has already signaled their complamency towards Taiwans future in regards to China, and it is because of the financial control China has on the dollar. No shots will be fired, and Taiwan will be brought back under some sort of Chineese oversight/control.

The Question is, "Does the USA sit Idly by while China uses its aggression to take over all of Asia or do we fight the Chinese Aggression. Is whatever China says the last word, or do we uphold the free countries of the Earth?

China chose to conquer Tibet. They had no real claim to that territory, but we let them take it and to kill many people there.

China is a blight on this Earth and China suppresses all worship of God and any Religion which uplifts people and makes the State take second place.

China is always posturing, but if the world shows that the the entire world is against the actions of China and willing to stand against it, China can be brought to its knees. China depends on the world to support it. We buy products from China. Without our support, China would become a nation of rice eating preasants with not foreign trade. China would be very stupid to attack any country with a nuclear weapon. We would have to retaliate in kind and it would be devastating. China could be destroyed in the blink of an eye. I doubt if even Russia would let something like this go unanswered.

Very well said, after 9-11 we witnessed russia give aide to the usa and something tells me that if china set off a nuke russia would be back on our side just like they were during WWII.

Well the Pentagon has been repeatedly issuing headlines along the lines of "China's Arm race threatens the US" "China is a military threat" "We expect war with China in the next couple years".

link?

China's economy has been growing at a rate of at least 10 percent for each of the past 10 years, providing the country's military with the needed funds for modernization.

?Maybe if America stopped interfering where they don't belong people wouldn't want to hurt you all the time?
What does that have to do with the situation in question here? The only realistic source of a major conflict between the US and China anytime soon is if China chooses to invade Taiwan. That's an invasion of a Democratic country which has been defacto independant for over 50 years. I certainly think its the US's business to defend Democracies which get unjustly attacked if asked by that country, especially when they are attacked by what can current be considered either a Communist or Totalitarian regime (depending on how you currently view China)

Btw, China is bluffing, they could only do some damage to the US currently with their nukes, and the US could nuke every single square inch of China in retaliation if we wanted to.

I'm sorry, but I don't feel like getting nuked by China. There's no gawd waiting to reward me for destroying heathens, either.

The point is unless China's government is run entirely by madmen they are not going to use nukes period over a conflict involving Taiwan with limited stakes. (The US is certainly not going to try to occupy China.) I don't see what one earth the destroying heathens comment is about, the situation is about protecting a truly Democratic country from military invasion by a country with a totalitarian government.

To add to that- What country was America originaly part of? 😉

OK the initial explosions only wipe out a few American cities. But the fallout would then take the prevailing westerlies across the rest of the US. I do not think 10s of millions American lives and taking us back to the 1800s is worth protecting one little island that if left alone would roll over in a week. I do believe they have written in their strategy books this option, just like we have written plans for a war with every nation on the planet. Somewhere in the Pentagon is plans for almost every eventuality. Thats what these people do, they plan for everything, well they try to anyway, remember your boy scout training.

I suspect you are vastly overestimating fallout here. Other than in nearby areas it won't do much. Nuclear fallout actually has a very short half life, so it becomes not all that dangerous fairly quickly.

By the way, if you're talking right now, China can't sucessfully invade Taiwan period. It takes alot of troops being shipped over in a hurry to overwhelm Taiwan's 1.7 million man army.

well wasn't the cloud from Chernobyl blamed for many abnormalities as far north and west as Finland. Like skin ailments or something similiar, like melinoma? I honestly don't know that much about radioactive fallout. However if they were to destroy say LA, Honolulu, Seattle, San Diego and San Francisco or any combination thereof, that's still more than I'm willing to pay. I realize these guys have to rattle their sabres, and sound tough, but geez, we're talking about at the very least 100s of thousands of people who have nothing to do with it, dying.

Some of the recent studies have suggested previous reports heavily exaggerated the actual consequences. Regardless, fallout from a nuclear reactor is actually very different than the fallout from a nuclear explosion, with the nuclear explosion fallout having a vastly shorter half life.
