China rejects U.S. warning on toothpaste

China called a U.S. warning to consumers to avoid Chinese toothpaste because it may contain a poisonous chemical "unscientific, irresponsible and contradictory."

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration increased its scrutiny of toothpaste made in China because of reports that the products may contain diethylene glycol, a thickening agent used in antifreeze and also as a low-cost ? but frequently deadly ? substitute for glycerin, a sweetener commonly used in drugs.

In a statement posted on its Web site late Saturday, China's General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said low levels of the chemical have been deemed safe for consumption.

The FDA was not aware of any poisoning but found toothpaste with the chemical in a shipment at the U.S. border and at two bargain retail stores, a Dollar Plus in Miami and a Todo A Peso in Puerto Rico.

China's main food safety regulator said in its statement that the ingredients of toothpaste exported to the U.S. is offered to the FDA, showing the amount of diethylene glycol. Also, the toothpaste's labeling has already been registered with the FDA, allowing it to be sold in the U.S, the statement said.

The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said experts from the Health Ministry had deemed diethylene glycol a "low-level" poison that does not accumulate in the body and found no evidence the substance caused cancer or deformities.

I feel better already

The problem with China is that, far from being totally socialist, the companies that operate there are EXTREMELY free market, to the point where not only are they free to do whatever they like, but are often shielded from any kind of consequences by the government. Of course they have to operate under government authority, which makes them socialist in one sense...but in their dealings with consumers, they are literally free to do virtually anything. It's like the worst combination of free market and socialism. Chinese companies frequently outright steal from foreign companies as part of "R&D", frequently substitute substandard or even dangerous parts in their products without telling consumers, and overall make Enron look like a beacon of responsibility. Part of the reason Chinese companies are growing so rapidly is that they are able to pass a lot of costs on to the consumers as externalities, in ways companies in responsible countries could never do.

Whenever possible, I avoid products from Chinese companies. If all they are doing is manufacturing cheap junk to sell at Wal-Mart, that is one thing. But with a lot of Chinese products, it is increasingly becoming obvious that you get what you pay for...they are not the good deal they appear to be.

No joke, every time I pick up a Chinese product I have to wonder at its content of lead, mercury, uranium or who knows what. Usually I put it back on the shelf. It seems the Chinese poison train is unstoppable.

Capitalism is the worst form of communism.

I really wish they labeled the country of origin on food products; I can't ever seem to find it.

There is some ethylene glycol in Tylenol, also. Although I am sure it is in very small quantities.

Are we really getting so cheap, that we need to import fuvckin toothpaste?

No thank you! Anything that goes into my body has a certain criteria, which excludes foreign countries. :|

We should never be having a discussion about such things.

This is more save a buck damage from the ultra conservative idiots.

I would never consider eating any kind of consumable from China;

U.S. market flooded with foods unfit for humans, tainted with carcinogens, pesticides, bacteria, drugs
</a>

WASHINGTON ? While Americans are still recovering from a scandal over poison pet foods imported from China, FDA inspectors report tainted food imports intended for American humans are being rejected with increasing frequency because they are filthy, are contaminated with pesticides and tainted with carcinogens, bacteria and banned drugs.

Last month, like most months, China topped the list of countries whose products were refused by the FDA ? and that list includes many countries, including Mexico and Canada, who export far more food products to the U.S. than China.

Refused by the FDA in April because they were "filthy":

salted bean curd cubes in brine with chili and sesame oil
dried apple
dried peach
dried pear
dried round bean curd
dried mushroom
olives
frozen bay scallops
frozen Pacific cod
sardines
frozen seafood mix
fermented bean curd
Among the foods rejected because they were contaminated with pesticides:

frozen eel
ginseng
frozen red raspberry crumble
mushrooms

Frozen catfish was stopped because it was laced with banned antibiotics. Scallops and sardines were turned away because they were coated with putrefying bacteria.

<a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=56004">Seafood imports from China raised in untreated sewage
Fish products consumed by Americans treated with dangerous drugs, chemicals
</a>

WASHINGTON ? China, the leading exporter of seafood to the U.S., is raising most of its fish products in water contaminated with raw sewage and compensating by using dangerous drugs and chemicals, many of which are banned by the Food and Drug Administration.

In China, No. 1 in aquaculture in the world, 3.7 billion tons of sewage is discharged into rivers, lakes and coastal water ? some of which are used by the industry. Only 45 percent of China has any sewage-treatment facilities, putting the country behind the rest of Asia.

According to a new report by Food & Water Watch, the aquaculture industry crams fish and shellfish into facilities to maximize production, generating large amounts of waste, contaminating water and spreading disease if left untreated. The industry tries to control the spread of bacterial infections, disease and parasites by pumping the food supplies with antibiotics and the waters with fungicides and pesticides.

Because you have very little regulations or enforcement over there you end up with stuff like this, plus filthy food preparation areas, tools and equipment, very poor hygiene of the workers, etc? Just thinking about consuming any of those products turns my stomach.

What happens with these bacteria?s and funguses become immune to the antibiotics and fungicides and pesticides?

Even worse only a small portion of the imports actually get checked by the FDA which really does spot checks because there are not even close to enough inspectors to check everything.

This is not a 'conservative vs liberal' issue, this is a growing problem for all consumers. With more and more products getting made overseas, the US has less and less control over the quality and specifications of the products. Personally I think it's worth it to pay a little more to get something sourced here -- even though we all know that doesn't guarantee anything either.

I don't understand how someone within the United States can be sooo cheap to purchase toothpaste at a dollar store. American made toothpaste is sooo cheap anyway. I mean you can get a large tube of collgaite for 1.50 at walmart. Is it worth your health saving a dollar.

Our ENTIRE COUNTRY is increasingly imported from China. Slave labor makes a cheap product. Americans want cheap products, even if it?s poisoned many of us only look at the price tag.

The agency said toothpaste containing diethylene glycol was sold under the names Cooldent Fluoride, Cooldent Spearmint, Cooldent ICE, Dr. Cool, Superdent, Clean Rite, Oralmax Extreme, Oral Bright, Bright Max, and ShiR Fresh Mint.

But This is pretty disturbing.....

MANAGUA, Nicaragua - Nicaraguan police seized 6,000 tubes of a Chinese-made toothpaste suspected of containing a chemical that killed at least 51 people in nearby Panama last year, the health minister said Sunday.

All U.S. imports of Chinese toothpaste were halted last week to test for diethylene glycol ? a chemical commonly used in antifreeze and brake fluid.

In a statement yesterday, federal health officials called diethylene-glycol poisoning ?an important public safety issue.? The Panamanian government last year inadvertently mixed the poison made in China into 260,000 bottles of cold medicine, killing at least 100 people, prosecutors there said.

Wow, look at all the dead people over toothpaste and cold medicine, better think twice before buying Chinese products, the sad part is, most of the poor people with little or no money will buy the cheaper products...

Quoting and bolding the most important info in the thread.

I'm going to go ahead and stereotype the majority of Chinese people from now on...just because this is something a Chinese kid I know would do. Stupid kid. He's got lice.

how old are you?

What is funny is most of you brush your teeth with poison anyways. I don't know what you think fluoride is, but it isn't safe. That is my opinion. Of course there are plenty of links on the web that say fluoride is safe, and plenty that say it isn't. I am just providing one that states it isn't safe.

Fluoride

Fluoride

They put fluoride in the drinking water. I only drink rainwater and grain alcohol.

That they do. They even put it in "nursery water" to give to infants.

I drink well water. Though I haven't tested it for fluoride, I know it occurs naturally in several water sources.

I am not sure if this applies to everything, but often, when some product is concentrated and added later to something, it is worse than having that substance naturally. AKA ephedrine is available naturally from plants in the southwest US, as well as other parts of the world, in a bush that some call "morman tea" and it is safe, but when extracted, and put into pills in a pure(or synthesised form), and not naturally, ephedrine causes all sorts of problems.
