http://finance.yahoo.com/news/3-charts-show-chinas-scientific-192255174.html

A team of researchers from the University of Michigan and Peking University in Beijing published a study highlighting China's growing scientific dominance in a recent issue of the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Specifically, they focused on China's potential to knock the U.S. out of its spot as the world's undisputed leader in the science, tech, engineering, and math fields — collectively called STEM.

The researchers write: "Two recent reports by the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, and the Institute of Medicine have raised concerns that the United States may soon lose its scientific leadership role and suffer negative economic consequences.
"

Manufacturing pulled out from under the middle class and the tech/science jobs are next. The smug people around here who are so very happy to see the manufacturing in other countries (so they can buy their cheap stuff) may very well be feeding the country that's going to turn around and eat them.

That giant sucking sound might be gaining more force....more than any of you imagined. Did you honestly think that China was going to stop at the 'lowly menial manufacturing job'?

All the brains in the world mean nothing if your people lack the will to innovate. Just as how the Iraqi lack the will to fight for freedom. Let us know when the other worlds countries starts picking up on those qualities.

US will be a banana republic in every way in 50 years. Thank god I'll be dead. My parents prolly lived in America's epoc most being born in the 40s...but i caught the tail end.

Good times almost free tuition (about $200 a quarter), Employers actually flew me out to headquarters when I graduated for interviews. Provided training whatnot. Now kids chain selves to debt for life and most are looking into dead end job market. Unless HC to take care of ppl like my parents who had it best.

Nothing wrong with capitalism. Even China practices it. But we don't have it. Were money managers who raped economy and banks they manage on the hook for their loses? Nope tax payers were. We live in a oligarchy or Crony capitalism.

There are many forms and a wide spectrum of "capitalism" is perhaps reason for confusion in terms. But most successful govt are capitalist.

Some of the best posts on these forums are by Engineer. Twenty years later, we still refuse to learn anything from Ross Perot's main campaign point. Keep up the good fight bro.

No it isnt. They subsidize their industry. Crony capitalism to the core.
China's economy is kind of like European monarchies were. Private property is tolerated and commerce is encouraged, to the extent that it serves the "greater good, " but in truth everything belongs to the state.

You're pretty much clueless on so many levels in most threads.

Sorry, it's just a fact.

Of course we have it, but the large companies in the US are being Capitalists in China.

Probably oligarchy is true, I believe some indepentent studies have renamed the US that these days.

The smug people around here who are so very happy to see the manufacturing in other countries

As opposed to the dumb people around here who think it's their birthright to lead the world at things... despite NOT leading the world at things.

If we want to lead the world in science, there's only one way to do it. Now, it's real complicated for the dumbshits, but here it is:

LEAD THE WORLD AT SCIENCE.

That's it.

Dumbshits seem to believe it's all about electing some political tyrant who will force everyone to recognize spoiled dumbshits' birthright at leading the world.

And lots of whining about others surpassing us.

And lots of dumb bullshit twisting what Ross Perot once said into "see? We were guaranteed our birthright carved in stone so long as everyone else did thus and such..."

Oh yeah, and gleefully wallowing in the years (decades?) long National Pity Party - everyone everywhere lay down and pity us because we're not getting out guaranteed birthright granted to us...

Pretty much *EVERYTHING* but being anywhere close to having the best science scores worldwide... You know, actually LEADING THE WORLD AT SCIENCE.

so by all means... Let's don't do anything stupid and irrational like buckling down, studying, becoming the best in the world at whatever without waiting for around for some political hack asshole to grant it to us... Let's do the logical thing... Keep whining, keep demanding our guaranteed automatic birthright at the top of the heap no matter what, keep quoting St. Perot and his sacred guarantee, keep expecting the rest of the world and all of global industry to lay down and go along with it.

Yep. The old outdated way of Americans was when the going got tough, the tough got going.

Now it's when the going gets tough, whine, stomp feet, quote His Magesty Perot, threaten to hold our collective breaths until the whole world stops spinning for us and grants us all our automagic birthright to be forever #1.

Sounds like a plan.
