can we have something orbiting the moon within 10 years? doubt it.

We could have stuff orbiting the moon in 10 weeks. We have robots driving around mars.

I assume you mean "Canada" by "we": An all Canadian effort to put something into orbit around the Moon is possible, but I think too expensive to ever gain support.

We gave up on manned exploration, in fact NASA is has cut back a lot with manned exploration because of the risk/cost/practicalities, but it is till a much more romantic notion that someone is up there instead of a probe or drone. It costs more, but damn, it is a much more impressive feat.

Kudos to China for doing something with advanced spaced travel, since NASA has lost the "passion" and "romance" of manned exploration, its nice to know someone still believes in it. It's like the difference between a Corolla and a Ferrari 612, one is more efficient at what it does, but there's still something to be said for doing something just because it appeals to your emotional instincts and it makes sense, they're after the world's largest hydroelectric dam, 2nd tallest skyscraper(2008) and everything else.

Besides it's not like I'm paying for it.

Should get the 2 rovers together, then Race them Live on ESPN. Within a year there'd be hundreds of home made rovers flying to Mars for the latest Sport sensation!

Wow, the entire country is orbiting the moon? That's an impressive feat.

Dont underestimate the power of cheap labor.

Or the ability to steal and copy 40 year old technology. Damn those Chinese are innovative.

Well when all you have to do is copy other people's designs it makes it a lot easier.

Or the ability to steal and copy 40 year old technology. Damn those Chinese are innovative.
Didn't the West steal & improved papermaking, printing, and the 2 biggies are compass & gunpowder roughly a thousand year after China invented it?

Not long ago the Japanese were called copycats, but their automobile & electronic are now leaders in the industry.

Some patient & time the copycat Chinese may become the technology leader for others to follow.

Money talks, people will not stop looking for ways to get the best value for their dollar.

And one giant leap for the copycat Commies.

So when will I be able to place an order for The General Tsao's chicken with Pork Fried rice from my nifty space cruiser while in orbit around the moon?

china may have invented it, but it took us crackers to figure out what to use it for.

and you'd think with a name like gunpowder it would have been obvious.

Everyone steals from everyone.

The US stole plenty from the Germans during and after WWII, and vice versa.

Originally blackpowder were use for entertainment, such as beautiful displays of fireworks that still in use presently. However, some brilliant Westerners find a better use for it as an effective killing tool.

Is this correct?

http://www.historyforkids.org/learn/war/gunpowder.htm

But it was under the rule of the T'ang Dynasty that people really began to use gunpowder. T'ang Dynasty emperors used gunpowder to put on great fireworks displays. By 904 AD, Chinese inventors saw that you could also use gunpowder for a powerful weapon. First the army used gunpowder in the form of rockets. They put small stone cannonballs inside bamboo tubes and shot the cannonballs out by lighting gunpowder at one end. This is the same idea that makes guns and cannons work today.

My mind is a bit rusty since I last read this subject (circa late 80s). Chinese inverters did us blackpower for rocketries in warfare, however it wasn't meant to us as a killing weapon but as a power display of the Chinese against their enemy (Mongols). Similar technology that we use to day to make bang stick for festivals & to scare/drive wild animals/birds way.

Since we got there first the moon is ours right.... so then we should bomb china and stop them from taking our land and making it into one gigantic sweatshop. J/K

This isn't that big of a deal especially since all they had to do is copy a 40 year old design and then have their cheap laborers put it together, and also we not only have rovers on mars but probes out past jupiter taking pictures and doing scientific stuff.

Not sure why the interest in the moon. It may have some natural resources we could use, but our technology far off from being able to harvest it in any useable fashion.

it might not put china on par with the US in terms of space exploration, but they're doing something, and they've got big plans...same can't be said for most other countries....

This is correct. It's arguable that we wouldn't even have a space program if it weren't for German rocket science.

copycat is easy.
what remains unproven is whether a restrictive regime like china can foster actual innovation.

anyways i guess the advantage to having lead in everything in china is that they'll be well protected from radiation;)

I'm not sure why the interest in navel gazing since the early 1970's. We should have established a permanent settlement there by now.

westerners didn't call it black powder until new and improved gun powder came out in the 1800s. then black powder was used to refer to the old smoky stuff.

so, ha!
