BEIJING (Reuters) - A Chinese lunar obiter entered the moon's orbit on Monday, 12 days after takeoff, a feat hailed as a new milestone in China's exploration of space.

Chang'e One was given instructions to slow down by mission control when the probe was 200 km from the moon, so it could be captured by the moon's gravity, Xinhua news agency said.

Chang'e One is scheduled to scan the lunar surface from Wednesday in preparation for an unmanned moon vehicle planned for 2012 and a manned landing within 15 years.

We better hurry up and sneak a flag and some footprints up there before they discover the landing in the 60's was a hoax.

(just kidding)

So, who'll be first to the moon? A private enterprise looking for publicity and Google's $20 million to defray their costs?

the chinese may have a late start in the space race but they are making progress very quickly.

Well when all you have to do is copy other people's designs it makes it a lot easier.

Finally, we can get rid of the giant rabbits in the moon. And bring Chang'e back I guess. I wonder if we can use her as orbital lifter.

wikipedia is an awesome thing... with funds and labor its relatively easy to get things into space, then let it fly for a bit to the moon... having things come back is the hard part

You're right. They're behind us in that they willingly fund their space program.

Technology to get there is a lot different than to bring something back; man or material
