China is launching their first astronauts to space next week. Lets hope all goes well.

I'm glad to see China getting into it.. hopefully it'll inspire more competition and/or cooperation. Mankind needs to get in space on a permanent basis.

Why are we trying to go into space? Other then to set up weapons and stuff from outer space i mean. It's already been proven that theoretically it's cheaper to set up a habitable place under water or in a "green house" on then to build habitation on another planet. Anything further then the 9 planets around us is too far to be of any use. Why spend trillions just build stuff that goes to space? Why spend billions to set up space stations? We have the satellites and such, and spending money on them is wonderful, but why the huge budget expenditure in space exploration?

Last I recalled, my computer isn't orbiting Pluto. When I was referring to the "waste of money", i wasnt referring to science research in general.

What's your point? I believe they are riding up in a Soyuz because the Shuttle isn't in use right now.

The shuttles are grounded due to the boards findings. NASA is working on overhauling all the crafts, although Endeavor is technically flight ready (it was being readied at the time Columbia was in space). I would be very dissapointed if because of one minor (yes, I said minor) accident will ground the most advanced space technologies. THe reasons I said minor are many. Mainly, all astronauts accept the risk of space flight, and this is the second time the US has ever lost a spaceship during a flight. Challenger was during launch, and Columbia during reentry. Yes, we lost Apollo 1 (which technically wasn't an Apollo mission, but was given the name honorably). In total, we have lost 17 astronauts. Out of the 107 STS missions, this is a small loss (14 people out of 749 people launched total). What you have to realize was that many scientific breakthroughs occurred on this mission, including the longest burning flame ball in history. The major controversy of the loss of Columbia is the damage to the Reinforced Carbon-Carbon panel from the falling foam. We are prepping Atlantis (STS-114) for it's return to space, after we have already reinstalled the Carbon-Carbon panels (Link).
