China approves 7-foot-5 star's entry in NBA draft

Great news for me being a chinese, him and wang zhizhi are gonna rip it up next year.

Link

You guys think he might go #1? If chicago or golden state gets first pick, i can't picture him going first considering all the big guys those 2 teams have, but if memphis gets him (ack, vancouver here), he just might.

How big is this guy weight wise? And what were his stats like over in the highly competitive Chinese leagues?
There's been virtually no centers over 7'2 ever that have been worthy of a #1 pick, so that height shouldn't be the sole reason to pick the guy. I'd put money on this guy being a George Muresan(sp?), with an invitation to surprise me otherwise.

That's cool. This guy is supposed to be pretty good. The NBA has been wanting him for a while but China wasn't letting him go. It'll be interesting to see how he really does.

And as for Wang Zhi Zhi, he has got some game but he needs to bulk up a bit and work on his post game. It's funny to see that big dude only working on the outside.

"As a league, to see world-class players coming into our league from Latin America, Africa, Eastern Europe, Western Europe and Asia is an exciting thing for our league."

NBA Commissioner.

He's skinny as a twig, but people seem to think he'll be able to "bring it" in the NBA. Here is an article on him from ESPN the mag... HERE!
The first two links on the upper right hand side of the page are also good stories about him (EDIT: The Bill Walton link is busted, but the article can be read HERE, The other one is HERE). ESPN the Magazine crowned him a "NEXT" athlete for 2001.

A pic of the skinny mofo can be seen HERE, it's almost gross to look at him but his legs actually look pretty developed, just his upper body is nasty. Apparently people think his body is still developing and he will be able to bulk up. Isn't that what they said about Shawn Bradley? Anyway, I'd like to see him play well.

His whole upper body is tiny actually. His arms seem really short and his torso is small too compared to his legs. I knew a guy in high school that looked like that, really big legs (length and width) but a tiny upper body. It looks weird and I hated that kid.

Can knock down jumpshots all the way out to NBA 3 point range with consistency.

That's pretty scary, i can see mark cuban trying to get him, and put dirk, wang, raef, and ming at the same time.

<< Shaq will break that guy if he doesn't bulk up. >>

hehe... that can also be said for many current nba players 😛

this guy is much more athletic than Shawn Bradley...if you have seen Zsi Zsi play on the Mavs, then just imagine him being 5 inches taller...he really is a good player, not as mechanical as you would think from seeing Bradley and Muresan flail about...He will go in the top 3 in the draft most likely...

His upper body needs some bulking up, but look at his legs, they're pretty cut. He's gotta be pretty mobile. They say he's got a great stroke so I can imagine him being Nowitzski like. They would probably play this guy at the 4 maybe even the 3 spot.

Wang Zhi Zhi is actually a pretty good offensive player. He scores a lots of points in the limited minutes he plays. He can put the ball on the floor. Did anyone see that spin move he did in today's game? Even though he missed the shot, I was impressed that he's more than just a catch and shoot player. I think Wang can avg 10-14 points if he got 25 minutes a game.

Hope the Warriors drafts him! Reading an article about him on Sports Illusrated, his agent said he preferred playing in only three places with huge chinese population: New York, Chicago, and Golden States.

Go Warriors!

from what i saw of him playing in like the olympics and the world championships and exhibitions i really dont think he's gonna be all that great. the nba is just desperate for big men. the guy has virtually no hops. and isnt all that athletic. he's like a chinese shawn bradley or gheorge muresan except that he has a 3 point shot that can pass and shoot. And the guy plays soft from what i read.

i wouldnt waste my draft pick on him not #1 anyways, i'd maybe give up a mid first rounder especiall considering the headaches of coaching a guy who cant speak english, the media attention, but well the nba people are stupid. I suppose from a ticket standpoint you could sell a lot, but there are better guys if you wanna just help your team win.

i remember seeing this guy blocking Garnett's shot during the olympics. this guy is a shot-blocking machine.
China was acutally winning in the first quarter with him, Wang and Batere in the lineup against USA. Then these big guys got fouled out quickly, then China lost like 120 to 70 something.

This guy is better than Wang, Wang got a nice shot but thats about all he has. He is slow, cant post up, and cant defend latterally.
But this guy is alot quicker with his feet, got a nice touch too, also clogs up the middle with his shot blocking ability.

Ok then how about a chinese Manute Bol

Just imagine him with a tiny asian g/f.

*whew*

Ok, enough of that thought.

at least she doesnt have to be on her knees

i'm extremely skeptical about those 7'7"+ guys (Gheorge, Manute, Bradley). they all sucked. Bradley was supposed to be Manute "w/ skills". Muresan was semi-decent at best...did he retire? It's annoying hearing about another giant who's "last year's giant w/ skills". The bottom line is that he's got to be quick, in order to survive. Sure he'll block some interior shots and grab some boards, but he'll be a another sorry gump with speedy NBA players blazing by him. Considering he's only 7'5", maybe he does have some mobility....i wouldn't waste a lottery pick with him.

Am I the only one who questions how the chinese managed to pop out someone over 5'5"? 😉 (or am I thinking of Japanese?)

This is why basketball is so stupid. This guy is basically so tall he can stand under the net and just catch the ball as people throw it across the court.

No that's very unusual.
