Yeah, that jumped out at me as well. This story is just one more reason to hate monkeys!

I'm actually reminded of Jane Goodall's "demonic ape," Frodo the chimp. Not only has Frodo killed and eaten dozens of other apes, he beat up the cartoonist Gary Larson and killed and partially ate a human baby girl. Even Goodall calls him a bully, and he seems to me to essentially be a sadistic serial killer.

Did I just read that link correctly? They let that thing live after it killed and ate a human child? WTF? :disgust:

I found that surprising as well, but it's important to keep in mind this didn't take place in the litigious USA, but in a National Park in Tanzania. IIRC, all the park workers were specifically warned NOT to carry their babies in backpacks (as is apparently the custom in Tanzania), because it looked too much like the way colobus monkeys (the chimps' natural prey) carry their young. Children under 12 are apparently not allowed in the park due to the danger posed by chimps.

I sure as hell wouldn't want to encounter Frodo in his environment (or anywhere else for that matter). Even Jane Goodall won't go anywhere near Frodo without two bodyguards, after he once beat her nearly to death.

ok a couple of questions here. If a chimp is not in the monkey family what is it? Also I thought chimps were kind of small, for 2 chimps to rip off a guys nose, clothing, testicles and a foot would suggest they must be somewhat large right?

Not necessarily. Chimps are much stronger than humans. They could rip your arm off and beat the sh!t out of you with it if they wanted.

they're classified as great apes. The small cute ones you see on TV all the time are babies.

ahh ok, that makes sense. How large do chimps normally grow?

heh heh, I'm not a chimp expert

I think maybe 80-100 lbs. I read the links DonVito posted, that famous alpha male bully that ate the human baby was 120 lbs and they said that was quite big.

Besides, anyone who wants to play nicey-nice with an animal that can rip your arms off is just asking for trouble. They are not children!

Thank you for the clarification, Jack Hanna. Shouldn't you be getting back to Animal Planet?

C'mon, it was a funny title. You probably don't know what it's from anyway...

Hunting and eating monkeys is common amoung chimps in the wild, but Froda was a cannible? I hadn't heard about the killing and partial eating of a human girl, but do recall Gary getting thumped. Chimps can have sadist sides just like humans - I remember this one story about a group of young males which would mete out mob violence on females that had rejected them in the past, on one occasion using tree limbs and large stones to pound the poor female into oblivion.
I've seen chimps go after monkeys on 3 different documentaries and specials - it's really nasty. Sometimes they all just grab it and yank it apart, other times it's more like they hold the poor flailing critter down and bite it to death. And when they eat, they eat everything.

The average chimp is about as strong as 3 men, I'm surprised this guy wasn't killed. My guess is these animals were really abused in teh past and just flipped - going after the pills just isn't cricket! *cringe*

I remember seeing one show where the chimps would stake out strategic positions in the trees, with the idea of a monkey straying into the wrong place and then being herded along by the group, who communicated with each other and changed positions to continually outflank the monkey flying through the trees and keep him moving the direction they wanted -- toward a dead end with a couple of finishers who would make the kill.

I also notice the attackers were 13 and 16 y.o. males. I wonder if they have the run of the roost at that place, whereas in a normal situation they'd get bitchslapped back into reality by some older males and settle down.
