Pay someone or just do it myself? New to me house so I was also thinking maybe I should have an inspection done on the chimney? Thanks for any help in advance

This is my first house with a fireplace.

i don't think government subsidized housing has fireplaces. that's probably just a really dirty closet.

This. If you do it yourself it'll take you much longer, you'll make twice the mess, you'll do a shitty job, and you won't know if something is wrong.

I do my own. Depending on the house, it can be easy, or difficult. Mine's easy.

Two separate issues. First, NEVER buy a house with a fireplace and not have it inspected. Have it inspected first. Second, after it's been inspected and ok'd, then, you can clean it or hire a chimney sweep. Most sweeps aren't masons.

I really need to get this done....

Never have and I've lived here since 2008.

Place was built in 2005 but I highly doubt anyone has ever inspected it since it was built.

True, but MOST chimney sweeps here inspect them while they are cleaning the chimney. If they find a problem, they tell you about it (in writing to cover their ass) and recommend that you contact a contractor for the repair.

We've always hired a chimney sweep for ours even though at one time, I could probably have done it myself...but I'd rather pay someone to do it right, who knows what to look for during the process.
