Chill in the Air Because of DMCowan Case

Even though YOU and I know that Georgia is being ridiculous regarding the case against DMCowan, I have already felt the chill in the air it causes in the DC community. This morning, my boss "revoked" his written permission to install the Dnet client because he read the story on Slashdot. Even though he is sympathetic to DMCowan's case (and to DC in general), he said he does not trust HIS boss to be so and is completely and emphatically unwilling to test the situation by allowing the client to be installed on government computers.

It could have been a glorious fight...

starting to get caucious about where I install this client @ work... I have permission but now with this... not sure if thats enough...

Your pain is felt across many a open wound.

This is bad news indeed. If this continues, we could be in for some major trouble. I hope to recieve a call from davids lawyer today, I want to make sure that the threats the state gave him are idle, If David had to spend 15 years of his life in prison because of this, I would not be a very happy camper(cracker??).

I am surprised that your boss actually reads /. My boss doesn't even know what it is, and he isn't going to be told.

You should put on S@H instead of RC5. That way when you are explaining yourself you can say:

But it is a Screen Saver! A cute, non-offensive Screen Saver!

Not: I am trying to break someone else's encrypted code so that I can win $1,000.

Guess what? We are the poineers of distributed computation. Sacrifice is inevitable.

i think rc5 is right on, it isnt widely accepted yet and people dont like things that dont benefit them directly
i dont think he means that we should give up on DM's case but hes right that something like this was bound to happen

Only bound to happen because it's inevitable that some loser government slug of an attorney is trying to make a name for him/herself.

These are typically people who graduated at the bottom of their law school class who don't have a snowballs chance in hades of making a living in private practice. The only attorney lower in the food chain is called "your honor".

Why are they doing this you ask? - because they can. Government sets up laws in such a way that if they decide to make an example of someone, then they can throw the book at them with so many trumped-up charges that they'll cave and plead to something.

Hang in there Dave, INTENT is ALWAYS an element of an offense. You may want to consider discussing having a polygraph examination set up to prove (1 - you had permission (2 - there was no intent to cause damage.

Certainly it can be shown that there WAS no damage - ergo... no crime.

What a bunch of government-scum redneck losers. The best way to capture attention and get this to go away is to put IMMENSE political pressure on the elected slug with ultimate responsibility over the moron that filed the action. If he or she can be shown that his/her political career is OVER if this case proceeds, you'll be amazed how quickly it will be a bad memory.

I don't know if I agree with doing RC5 for the money, have spent alot more than 1000 in almost 2 years of cracking, and that won't even cover the electricity, of course if I would get the money, 40% to taxes, 30% for myself and my wife, and 30% for the ex-wife!

This could snowball into a real problem for all who have installed clients on machines they do not own regardless of who gave them permission, most likely the persons direct boss. But the direct supervisor may not have the authority to give the permission and if not given in writing guess who is going to go down if upper management decides that somehow the client is messing up there system. If push comes to shove the supervisor who gave the verbal permission may or may not, most likley not admit to giving the permission. I think the case we are discussing is not likley to happen to anyone else but it could so my suggestion is to cover your anus before the poopoo hits the fan.
I do not think that DM will be convicted of any crime but he will suffer just the same.
Bleep
