Those leashes have their places. When your kid is just walking good (like around 18 months give or take 6 months), he/she will go through a phase where they don't want anyone holding their hand. There were two or three occasions with each of my kids when I was taking them somewhere in public (lots of strangers) or with stairs or with a dangerous drop where I used one of those harness and leash things so that he/she could feel independent and not have a breakdown/tantrum because he/she didn't want to be carried or put in a stroller or have a hand held for safety reasons. They are really useful in certain circumstances. I don't think I've ever met any parent that just kept their kids leashed all the time or used a harness as anything more than an extra safety precaution during that frustrating phase kids go through.
I used one on my kid, but it was the choke chain kind with the barbs pointing inward.

The ONLY reason anyone thinks there's anything wrong with a child leash is that leashes are also used on dogs. So most people make a connection in their brains between a child and a dog, when in fact a child leash does not make the child doglike in any way!

I've found they get mean if you leave em chained up. I'm going with crate training personally.

Maybe parents these days just need to be parents.

I'm not judging but that's how I feel. Too bad, son, you must hold my hand at this particular time, like it or not. Everybody has to do things they don't want to. I think it's better to learn that while you're young.

No they're not. You don't drag a child around by a leash like a dog. It's just a safety device in case your toddler trips on the stairs at the mall or pulls loose from your hand in a crowded place and tries to dart off.

I think I remember these from when I was a really little kid...
It was like a really elasticy (read: not prohibiting at all unless I was way, way too far from my parents), and went from my wrist to my parent's wrist.
I don't think I ever minded? Can't recall anything anymore.
