I work on a college campus. For some reason, the campus has chickens living on it. I mean a lot of chickens, not jsut one or two. Anyway, about 2 months ago, I noticed a mother bird with 5 little chicks following her around. Now, those chicks have been growing up, and they're no longer following thier mother around, but they're always accompanied by two roosters. Is this normal of these birds. Are the roosters there to protect the young hens (they're about 2/3 of thier full grown size right now), or are they jsut waiting for them to become sexually mature? It's kinda interesting, though, seeing these 5 young birds around, and two roosters keeping close watch over them. Definitely makes chickens seem like a more noble species than you'd typically think. If I bring my camera tomorrow, maybe I'll try and get some pics.
