... oh wait, that's a reason to hate Chicago.

I went to school in the midwest and I'm a second generation immigrant that grew up in north Jersey. Friggin A... the pizza is good and the nightlife is reasonable but it turned out that I had more than a few reasons to hate it. Good shopping? BAH... tons of events? BAH

No Broadway, no Village... it's very hard to have any city be compared to NYC. That being said, Chicago isn't that bad... just I felt less safe in Chicago than I ever did in NY.

 
Overall I think pretty highly of chicago...the people are pretty down to earth compared to other places. There's lots to do, lots to eat, and there's lots of job opportunities.

Downsides...not much outside it to escape to on occassion...the govt. is corrupt as hail...its [supposedly] the 5th most segregated large city in the country...lots of deep down racism, altho not overtly offensive and there can be some great opportunities for minorities.
