You know what's stupid? They count the spires coming off of the Petronas towers but don't count the ones on the Sears Tower. The above picture is how they really are, notice the Sear Tower really is the second tallest building even today. You can't enter those spires on the Petronas, same as the Sears tower, they should stop counting it where people can't enter, or count everything. Either way Sears tower ends up #2, not #3. And yes at 2000 ft this new one would be by far the largest BUILDING.

thats a pretty tall and narrow building.

I noticed that it will only have 1/5 the floor space of the sears.

and congrats to chicago. I hope it doesn't tip over and take out downtown.

I think that way to measure is absurd as well, though I do believe that's just one of four official categories (one of which is just roof height). They say that the Petronas spires count because they're architectural, while the Sears Tower antennas do not because they're not part of the building structure itself.

EDIT: Meh on the proposed building. I'm not all that wild about having multiple twists in the building facade.

NOTES: Height is measured from sidewalk level of main entrance to structural top of building. This includes spires, but does not include antennas or flag poles. UC = under construction, number indicates year of expected completion.

So, you agree with Continuity?

Much like people on the Internet talking about penis size, architects like to artifically inflate their numbers. (In this case by adding superfluous spires that do not contain any usable or functional space.)

hmm...don't know what to think...except that I would've expected to be more impressed with something from calatrava. That guy has done some really, really cool stuff.

I've driven by Chicago a few months ago and did not see anything new and massive springing up. I'm too lazy but maybe someone here can find the issue, it has a pic of the building on front cover.

Probably has to do with 9/11 getting in the way..

I doubt it's going to be built with less than 1 mil square feet of leasable space. That's far too little for such an expensive and red-tape obstacled structure to be built.

Did anyone recently watch Discovery channel and seen that frontiers of construction show about the huge Tokyo spire that they are planning to build also? It's supposed to hold 250,000 ppl and have parks etc on the inside. Too many previews imo, and nothing ever gets built.

I saw that too. Interesting stuff. Would be cool to see one of these built in my lifetime.

It is a spire? I saw something that's more like pyramid.

That was the proposed 7 South Dearborn building.

IIRC, the financing fell through.

It's no coincidence that it looks like a giant screw: it's an tribute to Da Mayor's never ending treatment of Da Taxpayers, Da Cops, and Da Firefighters.

This is probably what he's referring to.

Ya that's it, except in the show they just showed one of the spires. In that diagram there are 3 of them like a tri-pod supporting a monsterous platform.
