Chicago moves to make laser gun sights/aids illegal

OMG - Lasers! They are killing people with lasers! Chicago has got their priorities messed up again. Next thing you know, they'll be banning triggers.

I'm not a big fan of laser sights. On the right weapon they can be dramatic in giving you a faster sight picture. They can be an aid, and with practice can potentially increase your rounds on target in a stressful situation. They often suck to install after market as your holster choices become more limited.

I really do like the new center mass laser sites. Will probably try one on the primary defensive weapon at home. They spread a mass of several dots onto the target and seem to be far more effective based on reviews.

A punishing ruling came down in Illinois on the 12th for gun grabbers. I guess maybe they can latch onto this nonsense as a consolation prize.

Its quite simple, we have the right to bear arms, but not to have ammunition for said arms. I am waiting for some state to ban the sale/possession of ammunition.

wonder what year that ad is from. probably a hene tube laser with a power pack.

Was a lasersight really going to make that $75 chrome semi-auto gang banger pistol so much more accurate and deadly?

...cos gangbangers use laser sights...
They should. I always thought laser aim was stupid, but I was watching Terminator a few weeks ago and changed my mind. The terminator used a laser sight because he was shooting from the hip instead of looking down the sights. That's exactly how stupid people shoot.

Do you think they put laser sights on something like a phased plasma rifle?

Personally I have never liked laser sights. They actually make me, and almost everyone I see using them, slower. This is especially true for any range that one would reasonably need to use a handgun for protection.

I can have two rounds in center mass of my paper target without a laser before I can even find the damn little red dot. Sure I can get a tiny bit of increased accuracy with a laser but at the expense of speed. Since I am still hitting the target center mass the slight increase in accuracy is not worth the significant loss in speed. The laser sight posted in the OP definitely looks interesting though.

Yeah but you can aim while holding the gun sideways, you can shoot from the hip, you can shoot the gun between your legs, you can use it with an electric actuator and a remote control to still know when the target is in the line of sight while you watch from your unmarked white van with black windows.

I would think the laser sight is for when you have time to aim, and you have one shot and want to make it count, like with sniping. Maybe that's why they're outlawing it, because in a self-defense situation it isn't that useful and they presume it's only used pre-emptively. Dunno.

Daylight visible lasers are primarily for untrained users. IR Lasers are used in night operations with IR gear and for target designation.

If so then that is very flawed reasoning IMHO on their part.

With practice on the right weapon they are indeed useful and can improve your rounds on target. In high stress defensive shootings even police officers have as low as 20% hit rate.

Personally at home, this is probably what I am going with...

Flashlight Strobes allow you to maintain your visibility while utterly fucking with and confusing your target.

I have one sidearm with a laser built into the grips...Makes finding holsters easier. But my daily driver is a .45 ACP and adding a laser really screws up finding just that right holster for me. Intent is to buy identical .45 for the house and mount the strobe or center mass laser on that. In this way, my carry piece is identical to the one in the rapid safe at home and I can keep those enhancements on one of them so that my practice and training are always with essentially the same weapon, same magazines... That matters more than having the ability to utilize your whole gun collection in a self defense scenario.

My best guess is they want to ban it because they can and it is one thing the gun grabbers can go after that isn't protected by 2nd. No functional reason. I will rescind this view if it can be demonstrated that any significant number of gun crimes involve a laser sight. Of course few if any at all do, as it isn't a very common accessory.

Well... Except that it is a built in option on some weapons, a design feature. Trigger safeties are also a design feature... Those aren't protected by the 2nd either.

So.. in some cases, banning laser aiming features effectively bans some weapons.

Ah that is an interesting bit of data. Cheeky buggars.

Which weapons would it ban? I'm guessing they're not as effective as the millions of other guns that don't have lasers.

Tek 9: Excellent for gang warfare and robbing liquor stores due to its high capacity magazine and easy concealment. No laser on it.

AK-47 long and non-assault (wood stock) version: Specifically designed for close range military use. Its loose tolerances make the gun extremely reliable, but not very accurate. Might be a good weapon for drive by shootings because 7.62x39 is a pretty powerful round that won't be slowed down by the walls of a house.

M1 Garand: The gun that won the war. Good for medium range gang warfare. It's accurate enough to hit Tyrone in the head from across the parking lot.

M107: This is 0.50 caliber, semi-automatic sniper rifle. It's great for extreme long range gang warfare. Long range rifles are great for lowering morale among rival gangs because the target literally dies before the sound of the gun shot reaches them, and the shooter can be far enough away that the target can't see them either. That fear of being shot with no warning might prevent rival gangs from hanging out on the porch, hanging out in the parking lot, or going outside in general. It can also be used as an anti-material rifle. One shot from this thing will destroy a car's engine.

Serious question: why do gangs NEVER use hunting rifles? That seems like such a logical choice. You could take guys down from 300 yards away.
