I doubt that dude...

i don't... that's how i found out about them. my friend's going to germany for christmas break, again, and she talked about how much she LOVED doners and how they're all over europe.

In Germany there a lot because of a lot of Turkish immigrants... but they aren't in the nice part of town.

As an American I wouldn't eat there for safety reasons and cleanliness reasons.

Im beginning to think you've never been to Germany, at least in the last few years.

I went to Germany in 2001 and 2004 to Frankfurt and Berlin.

And all the places recommended by the hotel, local people and magazines were not Middle Eastern places.

Thats how I usually travel for stomach safety reasons. In almost every country I go to.

So you stayed in the tourist traps?

No in fact in both cities were guided by locals who just helped us when we became lost.

We searched for street places and got lost, the locals in Germany were incredibly friendly in general, but they told us to stay away from Turkish places.

It might be a prejudice they have against Turks or Middle Eastern people but they told us to stay away from those places and recommended many nice Italian, German and also some very posh Indian restaurants.

There's also a generation gap too, kebab places are usually favored by the younger crowd and students. But there is a some anti-Turkish backlash going on, when they were voting on letting Turkey in to the EU you would have thought it was Iran being voted in or something.

The best kebaps in the world are in Den Haag, The Netherlands. A place down the street from the Albert Heijn that is past the embassy district if you start from the train station. I know that isn't much of a description but if you walk past the Vietnamese embassy and run into the Albert Heijn's, keep going down that street a little ways and you'll see it.

Maybe that is it.

I meant no offense to any M.E. people I just prefer a tasty steak or some Chicken Tikka to the kabob I've generally tasted from the Middle East.

On a related note, anyone know how to make that chili that they have in European kebab places? It was probably just dried chili pepers with chili oil or something, nothing fancy. Stuff was awesome, I used to have it with fries, burger, anything.

If the only thing that you're gunning for in Chicago are Doners then there's something wrong with you.

I would definately take a kebab over a steak right now.

But back in the day I couldn't afford the steak, plus where are you going to get steak at 4am?

Now you're putting variables on the comparison. Of course you're not going to get a good steak at 4am.

If Andy needs A1 though, you might be able to get a steak that needs A1 at 4am.

The point being--I can drive 1.2 miles up the street and get steak. I had filet mignon from Morton's last month that cut with a fork, no knife required, and almost made me nut. The point being--I'm going on to a Packer game, tailgating for 2 days and nights, and want some damn doner. :)

I did find two major distributors of Gyros meat, so I suspect they are taking the cones and just stuffing it in a pita and calling it doner. :(

Let's talk doner!

i lived in/around chicago for 6 ys and NEVER saw a doner-stand respective a middleeasternr retaurant where you can get REAL doner kebaps - and i KNOW what i am talking about since i moved from Berlin/Germany (HUGE middle-eastern/turkish community there!) - so i know what a real Doner is supposed to be like :)

Real: You get a huge flatbread/toasted...the doner and then either the garlic (or the hotsauce) is IN the bread w/ the veggies and everything.
It's basically "fastfood-ized" doner...but then maybe this is a european thing :) Never seen them here AT ALL.

Kebab is excellent if you're traveling cheap. Even in the trap areas, a kebab & fries won't run you more than 6 Euro.

If you can get a steak worth eating for 6 euro, I need to know where you went :p

Fast food places? yes?

I agree but Chicken Tikka is pretty easy to find in Western Europe for a good price.
