Amyone know of any good Doner joints in Chicago? I am flying in before the Packer game this weekend (Driving to GB), and I keep hearing all about the Doner there...but can't find anything.

I did find two major distributors of Gyros meat, so I suspect they are taking the cones and just stuffing it in a pita and calling it doner. :(

Let's talk doner!

Hmm, never had any when I've been in Chicago, but the best Doner Kabab I had was in Southern Spain right across from the beach in Fuengirola.

I have never seen a Doner in the US. So by Doner Kabob capital, it could just mean that there's one guy roosting up in the EL tracks selling them out of a lunch box.

Why would you eat a doner kabob?

Go get some Chicken Tikka or a good steak with A1

something tasty.

I lived on them overseas...#1 fast food in Europe now.

I doubt that dude...

I am sure you do. Do your homework before you question me, son.

I've been to France, England, Germany, Spain and Switzerland.

I never saw any decent Middle Eastern Restaurants in these countries.

The best I saw were Indian retaurants in Britain.

Now if you said Chicken Tikka Masala was the number one food in England I would agree with you.

Kababs are everywhere in Europe. Since there arn't 80+ McDs in large cities, Kababs are popular fast food.

Yea, they are huge now in England...even an association representing doner stand owners. :) They are the best after a night out in the pubs drinking pints. ;)

Try the Pita Inn in Skokie. I went there last week. Basically, they gave you a plate with doner kebabs, rice and lettuce, unlimited pitas and sauce and let you make your own pitas. It was pretty good.

In Germany there a lot because of a lot of Turkish immigrants... but they aren't in the nice part of town.

As an American I wouldn't eat there for safety reasons and cleanliness reasons.

You need to stop snorting that A1 sauce, man. Stop what you are doing and slowly back away from the keyboard.

I went to Germany in 2001 and 2004 to Frankfurt and Berlin.

And all the places recommended by the hotel, local people and magazines were not Middle Eastern places.

Thats how I usually travel for stomach safety reasons. In almost every country I go to.

That joker looks good!

.

The original form of today's döner kebab is Oltu kebab. Oltu is a small town near Erzurum, Turkey. The original form is grilled horizontally and the slices are cut thicker, after inserting a special L shaped Oltu shish along the surface. In the 19th century, the modern form was invented in Bursa. The original form is still served in many cities of Turkey.

Today, döner kebab is typically served as a kind of sandwich in pita (flat bread). This type of döner kebab has been available in Istanbul since about 1960. The döner kebab with salad and sauce served in pita, which is predominant in Germany and the rest of the world, was invented in Berlin-Kreuzberg in 1971, because the original preparation was not appealing enough to the German taste. The döner has been the most popular fast food dish in Germany since the 1980s.
