There is a possible job opportunity for me in Cheyenne, WY and I'm wondering what people's opinion is of the town who have visited or lived there.

I'm a huge fan of outdoor activities and I don't mind cold weather...although my wife is not as keen on this. I've been wanting to move out to Colorado/Wyoming as the area greatly appeals to me. I've been to Denver, Salt Lake City, and the norther part of Wyoming (Cody, Jackson, Grand Tetons, etc.) and love the area...wondering what Cheyenne is like. Seems like a big enough city to have what you need without being huge like Denver (but still being convenient enough to have Denver less than 2 hours away).

Any insight would be great!

Never lived in Cheyenne, but I have lived in western Wyoming, and have been to Cheyenne many times. It's a nice college town, (with all the problems that can go along with that) and they do get cold and a lot of snow in the winter.
Because of the college influence, Cheyenne may not be as conservative as the rest of the state, but still more so than many places.
 
Ive been to Western Wyoming, the Northern part of Wyoming (Jackson, Grand Tetons, etc), Denver, Salt Lake City... and if you want to go to the mountains ... go to Colorado.

There is NOTHING in WY.

Anyway Cheyenne is a nice town, ~50,000 people, compact. You can walk everywhere. Walk to work, walk to the grocery, post office, drug store, book store. It is really nice for that. The airport is amazing, just one room. Diversity is the name of the game in Cheyenne. They have both kinds of folk: white women and white men. Okay, there are other demographics there but not a whole bunch. The education level is fairly high as WY state govmint is based there.

Now onto Cheyenne's main feature: wind. Wind like you've probably never imagined wind. Think a month straight where the wind never drops below forty mph. That's March in Cheyenne. February and April are similar. The other nine months are breezy. Seventy mph winds are not rare. When Summer comes around and the wind dies, you'll come to miss it. Cheyenne is home the oldest oil refinery in operation in the US. You'll come to understand this when the wind dies.

Outdoors: Vedauwoo, a boulder scrambling paradise, is just up the hill to the west. Farther west is the Snowy Range. Eastward the high plains offer lots of cool hikes and great biking. Fort Collins is close for outdoor gear shopping and when you get sick of winter it is always 15 degrees warmer in Ft Collins than in Cheyenne. West of Ft Collins is the Puedre (sp) River, with kayaking and good hiking.
 
Cheyenne is a quiet backwater. Taxes are low and gas is cheaper than most other places. Most people who live around there prefer Colorado though.

It's not a college town. It the state capitol and there is F. E. Warren AFB there. Other than that, not too much employment.

The wind will drive you nuts after a while.

I lived there for eight years and I liked it fine, at least better than where I am now.

Cheyenne is much bigger than Laramie. Still decent hunting and fishing in the area however, and snow & cold in the winter.
About the wind...Wyoming natives say the wind doesn't blow in Wyoming...Nebraska sucks!

Property taxes, vehicle registration, state income tax, sales tax, ect were through the roof. And to make things worse, the pay wasn't all that great either.

Omaha wasn't a cheap city to live in.

I visit Cheyenne every summer when I'm out in the Big Horn Basin digging up fossils. Aside from the stinky oil refinery that's already been mentioned, it is a lovely, small town. I would get bored living there as a twenty something but can easily see myself living there as a real grown-up.
 
Wow...thanks for all the info. Sounds actually like a place I'd like to live...but not so sure my wife would be on board. Lots to think about.
 
I lived in Torrington, WY. (70 miles north of Cheyenne) growing up. I would never move to that area if I had any choice. Go to Colorado. It's nice there. Cheyenne is windy as hell and cold as hell. I remember winters as cold as -30* and winds staying 40+ mph for weeks if not months. (wind chill gets to -60* at times, record while I lived there was -68*) The Cheyenne airport closed a couple times while there because they had 40' snow drifts on the runways, and the wind was blowing 40-60 mph. The summers are hot as hell. I remember 100*+ temps often in the summer.


If you like the outdoor stuff but do not want the extreme weather go to Colorado or Utah. North Idaho, Southern Idaho (Boise) and Eastern Washington (Spokane) are good places to live as well, and they have better climates then Cheyenne.

That may not be a bad idea...but based on some of the posts in the threads...I think I would have an infinitely better chance at getting my wife interested in the immediate Denver area than the weather in Wyoming.
 
The only reason I know of Cheyenne, WY is because George Michael's Sports Machine loved to show bull riding for some god-awful reason on a nationally televised sports report show.
