Too bad you can't rent them with diesel engines.
Does Ford even make a diesel Expedition anymore?
I am pretty sure Chevy stopped making a diesel Suburban.

Chevy stopped the diesel Suburban a number of years ago. Ford never made a diesel Expedition. They made a diesel Excursion which is even larger and was built off of the Super Duty platform.

AFAIK last factory diesel suburban was 98 2500 series. There are a few places that build duramax suburbans tho.

I own an Expedition...but not one of the XL models. I like the truck, but as has been noted, it won't pass a gas station.
I personally haven't driven a Suburban since the early 80's, so I can't comment on the newer models, but they are also notorious for liking gas stations.

So I will be renting one of those "Premium SUV" for a 12 day "road trip", if you will. Will be driving around 3000 miles 2000+ of those will 4 people only, will get some snow on the way... maybe even stay for a night in snow/ski resort. Rental company's website say Chevy Suburban or Ford Expedition XL or similar, so if given a choice, which one would you prefer? based on comfort and safety...

You might want to check out Costco's price for the rental. I don't know where or when you are renting out of but one 12 day rental I checked (DENVER airport) was $904 including taxes. (premium SUV - ford expedition or similar) http://www.costcotravel.com/

( need to have a membership to make the reservation. )

I thought of the minivans the Siennas had optional 2nd row bench seats, at least they used to. That might not be the case anymore. Ask them?

apparently there is an 8 pax sienna with a second row bench. could work.

for OP, we once drove an expedition from austin to new mexico for skiing with 5 of us, 3 across the middle. middle was a bit cramped but it worked out ok.
