Chevy Recalls Cruze After A Steering Wheel Falls Off

Imagine turning your car’s steering wheel, or giving it a gentle tug, and having it break away from the steering column. Now you’re speeding along holding the suddenly useless wheel.

It sounds like a vision from a cartoon, or every driver’s nightmare. And it happened to at least one driver of a 2011 Chevrolet Cruze compact car last month, and General Motors Corp. is recalling 2,100 of the cars as a result.

While the recall affects a relatively small number of vehicles, it is an unpleasant development for Chevrolet, which has been riding high on the success of its new small car. Chevrolet sold 50,205 Cruzes through the end of March. That’s well short of the 76,821 units Toyota sold of the Cruze’s main rival, the Corolla, but it is ahead of the 37,379 Cobalts Chevy sold in the same period. The Cruze replaced the Cobalt and is supposed to be a departure from that uninspired model.

In documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the car maker said it traced the problem with that particular car to a case in which the wrong wheel was put in a car and replaced later in the assembly process with the correct one. But the new wheel wasn’t attached properly, the car maker says.

When the wheel separated from the steering column, the driver was able to get the car to the side of the road safely, and the company says it has tested other cars from the production run and found no similar problems. General Motors says it believes this was an isolated incident.

Chevrolet says it has changed the production process to make sure the machine used to attach the steering wheel can accommodate only the correct one. The company is recalling cars that were built before it made the change.

Under the recall, dealers will inspect the steering wheel to make sure it is properly attached. This service is free of charge and the recall is expected to begin on or before April 8, 2011. Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438.

makes you wonder though... I'd have a hard time imagining anyone besides a little old lady pulling the steering wheel while driving... so it sucks I guess but you're not driving properly if you actually find that out.

lol. those morons in the Garage praise this pos and get pissed when i recommend a civic over a cruze. if you want safety and reliability, get a honda. if you want to die in a fiery accident, get a chevy

Yea a isolated case due to soemone on the assembly line = all cruzes.

I mean its not like they have a recall due to leaking gas... oh wait thats Honda civics.

I can picture someone with extreme road rage screaming and cursing and jerking the wheel and it comes off. 😱

Why is this an issue? It's a feature! Your chevy cruize comes with a free, high quality frisbeethat is easily stowable when not in use

fail. honda found a possible leak and voluntarily recalled these BEFORE anything happened. that is being proactive. unlike chevy, which waits for something to happen (e.g., steering wheel fvcking coming off!) before taking action. that is being dumbactive

lol lets turn this thread into a chevy hate fest.

I really hope this is not a major problem. Competition keeps all of the car makers on their toes.

Honda Civic and Odyssey recall for fuel leak and wiper damage
Fit recall for possible engine damage
Recall of 379,000 various honda models due risk of injury or fatality due to faulty airbag component

Recalls are a fact of life for cars, even the best car made by the best car company may need one. Recalling 2100 cars to inspect them for a problem that hasn't caused an injury is not earth shattering news.

AGAIN 1 isolated case on the assembly line =/= all cruzes.

If you read the story you would see this was not a car design problem but 1 bad install issue.

Unlike when honda recalled over over 300,000 cars due to ignition issues that HAS caused injury.

Honda will recall approximately 197,000 Accord and 117,000 Civic vehicles

"Honda has received several complaints about such failures in these vehicles and is aware of a small number of related incidents, including one that resulted in a minor injury."

Yeah, that airbag recall I linked to said it had 12 'incidents' of issues with the airbags malfunctioning.

i dont need to read the article. if i see cruze in the headline, then i automatically assume its bad news

Hahaha... Wow, the trolls are getting lazy.

1200 cars is a VERY small recall.

That depends. How many of those have they actually sold? If it's 2000 of them, then 1200 is massive recall.

There are hundreds of thousands of Hondas in use, so the recall numbers are obviously big when they do recall them for something.

Chevy volt is neato for the technology, but fail because of pricing and double fail because in that price range it competes with entry level luxury cars that kick volt's butt in so many ways.

Is the Cruze related to the Volt? Not sure why you'd mention the Volt. Anyway--more than 50K Cruzes have been sold this year.

Quite a few of the new Grand Cherokees were shipped with a steering wheel that was about 5 degrees off center. Makes you wonder if they are inspecting them at all, since that should be an obvious defect.

I bought a new Marlin rifle. The front sight was so loose it was just flopping around. Yet they claim to test fire every rifle for function and accuracy...

Yes the Cruze and the Volt are the same platform. Delta 2. Also the Saab 9-3.

a) chevy sells more red corvettes than that a year, you think they really only sold 2000 cruzes this year? or are you just trolling?

b) the volt is sold out. and you cant compare an EV/hybrid to a regular car, apples to oranges.

just because, here you go:
http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2011/02/chevrolet_cruze_sales_continue.html
Last month, the Cruze outsold the Ford Focus and Nissan Sentra. With 13,631 sold, the Cruze was only 1,003 vehicles away from matching the Honda Civic, the No. 2 compact car in the country.

the corolla had top honors
