i don't know how you can say it drives nicely... my sister had a sunfire before totalling it, and it was the worst driving thing i've ever touched. when trying to parallel park, rather than backing into the space the car just went sideways down the street. i have no idea how that happened. it's incredible how they could make a small car like that feel like a conversion van, but they managed it.

Keep your Civic and let your friend buy the Cav. You know, since he's going to trash it like his Honda, right?

Also, what'd he wreck? ( Dibs on the engine if it's a Prelude/Integra. )

My friend who wrecked his Honda is looking to buy my '99 Civic DX (also low mileage - 33,000 may let go of it for ~$5500) and I was looking to downgrade a little.

Have an offer for a '98 Chevy Cavalier RS Coupe in perfect condition with new brakes, new tires, recent oil change + tune-up for ~$2700 and I have to say that it drives pretty nicely, plus the factory audio is pretty decent.

That's about the only decent offer right now for a car with <100K miles, newer than 1997 and is right in 50010.

horrible cars... cavaliers and sunfires have the highest fatality / cars sold rates.

He wrecked what is supposedly a '99 type-R hatchback. I feel sorry for the poor guy (he was at fault, only has liability) 😛

I can't attest to the newer models. I had an '85 (bought new IN 1985) and I had nothing but problems with it. I had to have the cataylitic converter replaced THREE times. 🙁

If it's a real Type-R, or at least has the engine from one, dibs. 😛

However, high odds are on the only things being "Type-R" the decals.

I got my '02 Focus for the price of a '98 Cavalier. I can't, for the life of me, comprehend WHY, because the Cav was the ugliest piece of machinery I've ever been around, they're plagued with problems, have NO interior, and the Focus was immaculate, is a reliable vehicle, and is LOADED.

cavalier's are ALWAYS cheaper than the focus. i guess you got a good deal or the cavalier you saw was a rip-off. the 02-present focus are ok IIRC... they got rid of the fuel pump problem in the 00-01 model.

Well, from what I gathered, the Cav was about 4x the price it should have been, and the Focus was about 2-3k short of where it should have been.

Wow, lots of fanbois in this thread, most of whom have never even sat in a Cavalier, let alone owned one.

I have owned 2 Cavaliers, including a '98. Nothing special, really. They were reliable and got excellent gas mileage. No complaints. If I was poor, I'd buy another.

My little bro has a 2000 Cavalier with 80K on it. Still runs fine. He was driving back and forth between Minneapolis and Chicago every weekend in it for about 6 months earlier this year. Never failed him.

One of my friends has a Focus. Its a lot smaller than the Cavalier. It seems to be reliable enough, just not a lot of car for your money.

Well, talked the car down to $2000 plus a computer fix 😛

At this point, I can sell my '98 Civic DX for a very nice amount ($6200, 35,000 miles with hardly noticeable dings in the passenger door). As I won't be around in college that much longer, decided to sell it and get the Cavalier in it's stead.

As long as it'll give me a reasonable ride for the next ~20K miles with reasonably diligent maintenance (oil changes, cleaning, etc.) and it is still intact enough to fetch something after another ~2.5 years, I'm happy 🙂

Good for you. I'm glad you could ignore all the negativity in this thread.

Yeah, well like I said, this seems to be most practical solution for the situation.
The only other rides that cost about the same are ~15 year old Honda rustbuckets or souped up ~'94 Pontiacs with 3800s. 🙁

I was going to post that you were going to pay too much. Since you got a fair price I'll mention that the car is okay. For someone not mechanically inclined it is fairly easy to work on. Fuel filter, oil changes, etc. Buy the book!

Power, handling, sight lines, and radio are quite good. I'd get 31-33mpg highway too. However, noise at high speed, vibration, and minor annoying problems (rattles, intermittent trunk light, breaking interior plastic bits) were frustrating.

they are fine cars, just your basic car, im betting the people dissing them have been tought to hate anything american but yet have never drivin or owned one. if you take care if it it will last a long time, just like anything else. they are like a dell, you only hear of the problems, and seince there are so many of them you here about them more often, not because they are worse than anything else.

Older generations are garbage.

Newer generations are garbage, just less stinky.

Wow, after reading this thread I'm feeling fairly unique. It's seriously been about my best purchase to date...except for my mustang of course.

Why would I want to own a piece of sh!t? I've sat in plenty - for drivers ed, two of my female friend's Cavaliers. Which btw, both have serious issues with them. Sorry you can't seem to realize that the general concensus by the public, Consumer Reports, Edmunds, and every other car site which agrees that they suck ass. But oh wait, they're opinions don't count either right?

Opinions are like azz's, everybody has one. But opinions and facts are 2 different things.

well its a fact that the cavalier has a crappy interior, is based on a platform that was in use for 10 years, and is noisy as hell.

other than that, it's an ok car. i actually like the early (96 or so) design.

Heh... I'll let you know in about 2-3 years 😛
The other kids are driving them all over town, so it can't be too bad.
