Chevy Cavaliers

What do you guys think of them in general? I guess broken down into mechanics + everything else.

My friend who wrecked his Honda is looking to buy my '99 Civic DX (also low mileage - 33,000 may let go of it for ~$5500) and I was looking to downgrade a little.

Have an offer for a '98 Chevy Cavalier RS Coupe in perfect condition with new brakes, new tires, recent oil change + tune-up for ~$2700 and I have to say that it drives pretty nicely, plus the factory audio is pretty decent.

That's about the only decent offer right now for a car with <100K miles, newer than 1997 and is right in 50010.

Guess I should add that this will be for a low-usage college beater (~3 years).
I suppose college car != getting laid, so only mechanical reliability matters 😛

Uh, why not keep the Civic? The Civic is 100000x better.

QFT, the pre 2002 Cavaliers have major headgasket problems, besides being generaly crappy.

After rereading your post, I have to ask what type of crack are you smoking to want to do what you ar thinking about doing. And would you mind pointing me to your dealer.

Depends on the year i imagine. They're no frills, for certain, but I've had mine for 7 years now, creeping up on 200,000 miles and no major issues *knocks on wood*. That's not bad for a car that cost a grand total of $9000 almost new.

The Chevy Cavalier is the biggest POS known to man. I'd rather by a yugo...............

What year is your's? The one I'm looking at is a '98er, hopefully late enough in the 90's to avoid the awful reliability period of the late 80's / early 90's.

For a 3 year, low use (~5K miles / year) beater, I'd seem to get more for my money than my current Civic ('99, 33K miles, auto trans, bare min everything else - eg. no cassette/CD (just AM/FM), no ABS, no CC, no power windows/locks, bleh factory speakers, etc.). Not to mention I wouldn't feel nearly as bad totalling a $2.7K car compared to a $5-6K one. 😛

You should call Chevy as I'd imagine you have the only one......................................
maybe they will put you in a commercial or buy it back............

Well, I don't know about the real-life version, but I abandoned that car quickly enough in NFS:MW 😛

3. Cavalier Of or relating to a group of 17th-century English poets associated with the court of Charles I.

thats the definition that sticks for me since its the most common usage. heh

As a auto tech I can tell you they are not bad. Basic cars but if taken care of will be ok. they got much better when the eco-tec motor went in.

I got my '02 Focus for the price of a '98 Cavalier. I can't, for the life of me, comprehend WHY, because the Cav was the ugliest piece of machinery I've ever been around, they're plagued with problems, have NO interior, and the Focus was immaculate, is a reliable vehicle, and is LOADED.

cavalier's are ALWAYS cheaper than the focus. i guess you got a good deal or the cavalier you saw was a rip-off. the 02-present focus are ok IIRC... they got rid of the fuel pump problem in the 00-01 model.
