Swing and miss for GM. Ugly with no manual. This car is an abortion.

How is the 335i faster? Even with a 400 lb. weight advantage, I don't see how that can make up for having 30% less horsepower. The badge does not add performance.

Luckily GM knows their audience, and doesn't bother with anything that doesn't put concrete easily-digestible numbers on paper.

Google says the G8 GXP did an 8:30 around the Nurburgring. Which is not bad, until you take into consideration than it was DESIGNED for that damn track (literally referred to as 'Nurburgring-tuned'). Its bloated ass needed the high speed sections to post something respectable. And then you get to consider that the Cobalt SS was still eight seconds faster. I don't see many people arguing against the fact that a perfomance Cobalt is still crap. Because it's a Cobalt. I don't want a race-tuned Kia Rio, either.

Like I said, GM knows how to make GREAT cars...on paper.

And in case anyone is wondering, yeah, this is a G8. SS is a VF Commodore. VF Commodore is a facelifted VE Commodore, a.k.a G8.

It might have a chance if they didn't price it so laughably. And it had decent styling. And an interior that wasn't the exact same textured plastic diarrhea that people can't seem to stop praising for its 'quality.'

Over the years and years that I've been posting on forums there is one clear result. Most of the posts that you or anyone else on this forum make will not have any tangible benefit. The strong opinions and criticisms written on this unfathomably small bit of Internet mean nothing. Nothing at all. It's actually quite liberating.

I think some of you are comparing apples to oranges.

Try fitting 5 adults in a 335i. The Commodore is huge inside compared to a 335i or V36 Skyline.

Even with 4 big adults you can comfortably do a nice 5hr drive in the Commodore.

Try being stuck in the back of 335i for 5hrs.

Even their other badges have them like Cadillac with their V series. It wants a bottom brand Family hot rod like the Charger SRT-8 or the Taurus SHO. Now I would probably get either of these over the SS, if that was my market.

But I wouldn't be so quick to trash this as well it has to be a poor handling "Merican" car. GM has the CTS-V. The CTS-V has gotten great reviews world wide for its handling and overall performance. The Holden that the GTO/G8 was based on also had glowing reviews, for a lot of what have been trashing it for. It's a developed and runs as a fun car that you toss around corners, that you spin the wheels. Part of it was value as well, but that is kind of lost here. But that's not the point, want a better sports car, get the Corvette. Want a better handling car. Get the CTS-V. Want a car that they can have fun from redlight to red light, that you can try to convince the wife to let you get because it can fit the kids, get the SS.

Easy it uses the SS badge because it is a singular offering with one target audience. Like when they took this before and called it a GTO, before they eventually turned it into a full line-up with the G8. SS just happens to be the only badge that they could really get away with calling it that would imply the market they were targeting it at. May Iroc or Z28, but I think people would get pissed at that since they were only used on Camaro's. The SS badge is much sluttier and has been on everything, even a Malibu.

Much less impressed. Only 415hp (could you at least just match the Camaro Chevy) and no manual. Looks like they are going more for the luxury aspect...what are they thinking...as others have said in this forum...that is what Cadillac is for. For whatever reason the pics above look more pedestrian than the pics of the Holden I posted in the OP.

What exactly options do you get in a $45K BMW 335. SS comes standard fully loaded.

At 96 Cu/Ft Interior Volume the BMW is the same size as a Civic 95/cu ft

The new SS will clock in around 110cu/ft - Significantly larger than a 5-series at 102/cu ft as the G8 had 107 cu/ft of interior volume.

Apples versus Oranges. No one is cross shopping a SS & 335.

it only destroyed everything in its class when the turbo version came out, on the track. its great for what it is.

no reason to track it out, you want that, you get a CTS-V

Why would you compare the SS to a 335i? Are you aware how large the SS is? It's 6 inches longer and both wider and taller than a 5 series. How much will a similarly performing 5 series cost?

I do agree the looks leave much to be desired. I wouldn't call it ugly, just really bland. The car it is based on, looks much better.

You might want to gain some perspective. The G8 GXP was larger than an E60 M5 which was its contemporary. The M5 posted a ring time of 8:13 which is only 9 seconds faster than the Cobalt at 8:22.

2008 M5 - $85,000
2009 G8 GXP - $40,000
2008 Cobalt SS - $23,000

The Cobalt SS was a complete freak of nature from a performance standpoint. Almost as fast as an M5 at 1/4th cost.

He clearly said "faster". The 335i will be down 115 hp to the SS, and will clearly not be "faster".

Considering where all of the eqiuvelant full sized performance cars are priced, the SS is about right. I don't know why anybody but a complete fanboy would assume 335i would outhandle and outclass a car that hasn't even been released yet.
The front clip looks like it's straight off of a Malibu, but beyond that the car looks OK, the more I look at it. Silver does not do it justice.

You're confusing 'faster' with 'quarter-mile time.' And even then, you would only be trivially correct. 0-60's for the G8 GXP and the 335i are between 5.0-5.3, and 5.1-5.5, respectively, depending on what source you believe. 1/4 mile ET's are both low-to mid 13's, with the G8 cited closer to 13 and the BMW closer to 13.5.

And yeah, I'm totally a BMW fanboy for being able to acknowledge that this car that I saw five years ago (except better looking) is retarded in comparison to its Japanese and European competitors (doesn't have any in North America. Who buys a Charger? Besides rental companies, I mean).
