Has anyone on here ever gone to a chess tournament? I play online every once and a while on playchess.com (I'm a 2000 level player). Anyway...what are tournaments like? Is there anything weird I would need to know?

Played tourneys on ICC (internet chess club) and its just a string of matches, pretty fun.

I went to tournaments as a kid...prettymuch a ton of tables setup and 99% of your time is spent sitting around doing absolutely nothing. Like most i went to one that was a ladder dual elemination tourny, and I dunno it just seemed to take forever even though they were timed games. most of the opponenets were very impresonal and boring too, mostly older guys seemed like.

oh and dont kibitz...the chess gestapo will throw u out 😛

Well, I am a USCF member. I used to play online at chess.net until you had to pay. Besides, nobody good plays there anymore. I play at yahoo, but the interface is not great. My handle is GMElias2863 if you want to play me (I am not 2863....I am around 2200). Anyhow, ICC is the best, but it also costs.

Good luck, and maybe we can play sometime.

BTW, are you ~2000 USCF, or on the internet? My USCF strength is in the A-Expert range.

EDIT: For a list of tourneys in your area, go to a library and look at the latest chess life magazine. They list the tourneys by state. Good luck.

i have an old (inactive) USCF rating . . . .

. . . . and i also played top board, Team B for the Dublin (Ireland) Chess Club (which meant i got to play the very best players in Ireland and N. Ireland) and managed to scalp a Master or two . . . . had an Expert Ranking briefly (back and forth with Class A).

it is very different playing a live person across a board (as compared to correspondence or 'net play). There are "psychological" pressures in Tournament Chess - including that ticking clock - not found in even Club play.

I've never played an OTB game so I don't have a real rating. I used to play on yahoo but I hated it (bad interface and WAY to many cheaters). I had a 2300 rating on yahoo. I decided to buy Fritz 8 because it came with a life time subscription to playchess.com. So for $50 I got a good chess program and life time subscription. I really enjoy playchess.com. I tried ICC and just hated the interface.
