I really wish I had friends that liked playing chess. I used to play all the time when I was younger. I played in tournements, went to a National competition, had an official ranking... all that stuff. Hell, I even bought a chess clock! I guess I could play online but seeing your opponent's reaction and just the tactile nature of the game are important aspects I don't really want to play without.

It's a great game of skill of planning. Too bad more people don't play. :(

Hey Rapter, I too miss the challenge, unfortunately most of my friends either gave up or passed away :(

I remember as a kid the first time I did en passant, I got into a big fight with my friend who thought I was cheating :)

I once played someone who tried to castle queen-side, after he had already moved the rook which would take part in the castling. When I objected, he insisted it was legal.

Yes, "en passant" or "in passing". Not used very often, but a good move if you know how to use it.

Interesting. I never realized you could go ahead and capture the pawn doing that... I'll have to try it next week when I play my new challenger, David. (I have no idea who those girls are)

haha is that mandy moore?

It's been a long time since I played chess. I was the #2 player on my university's chess team.

Heck....descriptive notation was still mostly used as algebraic was just starting to gain ground.

need to get an atot chess meet going on
Another idea would be to start an ATOT chess team. I've noticed that chess threads tend to appear on AT on a fairly regular basis, so there would seem to be some potential interest out there.

A number of online sites offer free league play, either in the form of timed games on the Net or as correspondence chess.

I have never ever ever ever been able to pull it off. Even in my most agressive game, all I could do was put a pawn in that position and hope the other player makes a mistake. Nope.. never....

From what I can tell GameKnot seems like one of the best, with over 100,000 registered players. It's correspondence chess, though, which means games typically run at a rate of 1 move per day or something like that. It also means players are allowed to consult chess books and game databases if they choose to (but no chess engines or asking friends for help).

Other sites I seem to recall offering league play include Chess.net and Chessville.com. I'm not 100% sure, though, and really don't have time to do the research and work needed to find the right site and get a team established. If someone else did it I would join up, though.

I haven't played in a long time, and never played much, but I knew about that pretty much from the get-go
