The Office of Special Trustee was established by Congress in 1994 to reform financial management of the trust system. Indians sued in 1996, claiming the mismanagement cost them between $10 billion and $40 billion.

They settled for $3.4 Billion...but I'll be surprised if they actually get it all...

I am a bit biased because I do have Cherokee blood as well as Black Feet blood in my family but here are my views. The freedmen that were accepted into the Cherokee nation were accepted at the time because the Indians felt some kinship with how the slaves were being treated. It was for that current generation and that generations direct descendants. It was never intended to be something for every generation to the end of time anymore than I can claim to be part of the Cherokee nation because I have a great grandmother that was Cherokee. It doesn't work like that. You have to have a portion of your heritage above a certain percentage. It is like a black person calling themselves a member of a Kenyan Tribe because 300 years ago they had a family member from it.

The Cherokee heritage is falling apart and this is one of the moves to fix it, to bring it back to having a meaning again. It has been so diluted from outside influence that the language itself is in extreme danger. There is only an estimated 200 people that can still speak the language fluently. Sure they have their problems with corruption but this wasn't about the money. It was about stopping anyone who might have ever in recorded history had Cherokee blood claiming to be Cherokee. The way the Cherokee are trying to move to is one of if you are Cherokee and claim to be Cherokee then you have to participate and show that you are by first looking within the tribe for marriage and trying to practice the ways, not just show up on payday for a check.

I agree with you. Its interesting to note the double standards in the world today, a Cherokee must be Cherokee by race, but there are plenty of African people in the UK [for example] who claim to be Englishmen by simply being born there. Their parents were from Nigeria however which makes them not English, they are still a different Ethnic group but they are British by nationality. Just as anyone born in the US is American but not a Cherokee [despite being born on historical Cherokee lands].

Ethnic group and nationality is something people confuse all the time.

I think this is within their rights, but it's definitely a dick move. If one is a member of a tribe, those membership rights should pass down just like every other member's rights.
