Cher is about to get a new son.

Chastity Bono, the celebrity offspring of the singer and late husband Sonny Bono, is changing gender from female to male, her publicist told the Daily News on Thursday.

The 40-year-old, known to family and friends as Chaz, came out as a lesbian nearly two decades ago. Bono intends to make the transition from woman to man, publicist Howard Bragman said.

"Chaz, after many years of consideration, has made the courageous decision to honor his true identity," Bragman said.

"He is proud of his decision and grateful for the support and respect that has already been shown by loved ones.

Seriously, there has to be a song in there someplace.

Sadly, I remember the first time she ever came out on stage, on the Sonny & Cher show. She was such a cute little blonde girl!!

Now.......

now, does this mean she's no longer a lesbian, but in a male-female relationship?

She ceases to be technically a lesbian, and becomes a transgender. At this point, the "male" and "female" start to get blurred a bit, and normal rules about "straight", "bisexual", and "gay/lesbian" no longer really apply.

So yesterday she was successful at picking up women who are attracted to women. Tomorrow he'll be unsuccessful picking up women who are attracted to men.

What about the marriage side?

Her and her partner end the clam jam and she becomes a man. Could they be married legally? Assuming the state they are in does not allow gay marriage.

Isn't this the opening monologue to the Twilight Zone?

That's a interesting question. Does California, or other states, recognize a transgender as their new sex, or their old?
Seems if Chaz were recognized as a man she could marry in California.

Sure we would...with a bat...or a truck.

I went to school with an Iranian girl...who is in the process of this same thing.

She's on the hormones and has had her name legally changed...and is now legally recognized as a male...even though she still technically has a vagina.

Personally, I think the whole "sex-change" thing is wierd as hell...and I'm not likely to ever acknowledge it...if you're born a male...you're still a male even if you have the package removed...you can put a body kit on a VW so that it LOOKS like a Porche...but it's still a VW underneath...:p

Looking at the pic in the article you could be forgiven for thinking she already is...

Hmm that is an interesting question...

I think legally they adopt their new gender right?

Can you imagine a plastic surgeon sitting around twiddling his thumbs and thinking, "hmmmm... I wonder if could turn a woman's vagina into a penis?"

Agreed. You are what you are. The mind can play many games.

Sometimes we call it schizophrenia or multiple personality or bi-polar.

But when it's gender issues, oh no, you're definitely misunderstood. There is no disease here, you are really are something you're not. No question about that.
