Unfortunately, my new aluminum Chenming case came with a USB 1.1 and Firewire front panel. Has anyone found a new front panel circuit board to change the USB 1.1 to USB 2.0 (and still maintain my Firewire connectors)?

It's not the circuit board, it's the cables - the connectors are the same. You need at least shielded and some even use ferrites. Most 1.x cables are unshielded and some case makers even use ribbon cable from mobo to front panel jacks - that's how slow (relatively) 1.x is.
. You might be able to make replacement cables yourself. You would need some good shielded two-twisted-pair cable and a 2x5 place 0.10" header connector with crimp-on female contacts and some shrink tubing. Connect the shield drain wire to the shield on the front panel USB connector only. http://www.jameco.com has all the needed parts/tools.

Where's the :sun: ?

Hmm...if that's the case then I'll try the cables that came with my Bytecc USB 2.0/Firewire 3.5" drive hub (does that make sense?).

No, but whenever I plug in a USB 2.0 device XP reports that that device is not working properly and I then have to plug it into one of my USB 2.0 ports on the back of the case; inserting a USB 1.1 device works properly.

Does anyone know if Cat5 cable (minus the ends of course) would make a suitable replacement for a shielded USB cable?

. Cat 5 cable is rated for only 100 Mbit/sec. - considerably below USB 2.0 spec...
. Which mobo are you running? Is it possible that the rear USB 2.0 are being driven by an add-on 2.0 chip while the USB front panel headers are still being driven by the mobo chipset which is at 1.x?
. Some mobos do that.

Almost  time!

I have an Asus P4PE (the version will all of the goodies). According to the manual I am connecting the front panel cables to one of the USB 2.0 headers on the motherboard. I've asked another store that sells the same case and the salesperson confirmed my fears, because of the cable included with the case, the front USB ports are in fact running only at the 1.1 spec.

May I ask where you ordered your Chenming from?

I bought it from a local computer store for $99.99 CDN without a power supply.

As a side note, I just got back from NYC where I picked up a CompUSA brand USB 2.0/Firewire 3.5" adapter. I removed the USB/Firewire circuit board from the 3.5" housing and swapped it out with the front panel circuit board that came with the case. Now USB 2.0 works through the front panel!

Nice to know, thanks.

The circuit board on these cases are not USB 2.0 capable. They're just USB 2.0 compatible (meaning a 2.0 device will work, but only at 1.1 speeds).

I have the Antec version of these cases. I contacted Antec about it and they sent me a new circuit board straight away. Haven't had a chance to install it yet (it's for a new PC I'll be building), but this is what I discovered by googling usenet for info about the front panel USB ports.

(As a side note, no experience with Chenming customer service, but for anyone getting one of these clones, I would recommend getting the Antec brand if the price difference is negligible. I've contacted them on three separate occassions for things, and each time they responded quickly and with no questions asked. Simply put, their customer service is awesome.)

huh.. do the chenming xpider cases have usb 2.0? one of em does firewire so it would be kinda sucky to not really support 2.0
