White House Watch: Cheney resignation rumors fly

Sparked by today's Washington Post story that suggests Vice President Cheney's office is involved in the Plame-CIA spy link investigation, government officials and advisers passed around rumors that the vice president might step aside and that President Bush would elevate Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

"It's certainly an interesting but I still think highly doubtful scenario," said a Bush insider. "And if that should happen," added the official, "there will undoubtedly be those who believe the whole thing was orchestrated ? another brilliant Machiavellian move by the VP."

Said another Bush associate of the rumor, "Yes. This is not good." The rumor spread so fast that some Republicans by late morning were already drawing up reasons why Rice couldn't get the job or run for president in 2008.

"Isn't she pro-choice?" asked a key Senate Republican aide. Many White House insiders, however, said the Post story and reports that the investigation was coming to a close had officials instead more focused on who would be dragged into the affair and if top aides would be indicted and forced to resign.

"Folks on the inside and near inside are holding their breath and wondering what's next," said a Bush adviser. But, he added, they aren't focused on the future of the vice president. "Not that, at least not seriously," he said.

I personally never liked Cheney all that much, and Rice may be a step up. Surely there are alternatives though. I can hear the bottles being popped around here already though.

Cheyney doesn't have the heart to resign . . . literlally. Who would run the country if Cheyney left?

I heard this too. If so, it does raise a few possibilites....

Time for some WAS (Wild-assed speculation!)

Cheney: If you think about it, what does he have to lose by resigning? He's already said that he is not going to run for President, so the VP's office is a waste of good candidate bully pulpit. And he's probably ready and willing to get back to a Halliburton state of mind. If he's indicted, Bush will pardon him anyway.

Rice: It only looks up from here. The Bush White House will take a big hit with indictments, but if there's something that can grow from that stinking pile of manure, it's Condi. And in the VP position, with Rove, Libby and Cheney gone, this is the only other person that the President will listen to. She will also be well-placed to run as a VP candidate with a moderate GOP candidate (McCain?) or if she has the cajones, run for President herself! Edit: She could also draw a significant amount of the Black vote to the GOP. The only thing is can she effectively cover up the lingering smell of failed Bush policies that she no doubt had a part in.

Hillary:Why mention her? Well, if Condi is in the running for President or Vice President, then Hillary will have no choice but to run. Any male candidate will be seen as beating up poor Condi, but everyone loves a good cat fight between the ladies! The Democrats will not allow themselves to be on-upped by the GOP on this.

Stay tuned, you heard it here first!

Cheney would continue to run the country, as always. Stepping down from the VP role wouldn't need to change that.

Placing Condi in the VP spot positions her well to run for president in '08. Who knows what the motivation would be.

Condi has no interest in running. It will be an outsider, whomever Bush wants to be his successor, if this happens.

Bush doesn't know a single outsider

It will probably be another PNAC member

I thought liberals hated him partially because he had extensive connections to outsiders through his father.

If they were former adminstration under his Father then they are not outsiders

look at the PNAC crew

look at the current admininstration.. most all there before Bush.. odd isn't it?

Cheney is a man in poor health, so that might not be such a shocking choice, as one reason. Frankly, I think the man is gonna die in office, anyway. Not that I would wish that on him, but most people with multiple coronaries, don't live long. 🙁

Interesting analysis. I would also add that by doing this now, the Republicans get the blood-letting out of the way now, with a year to go until the mid-term elections. They can count on much of the American public to have dropped back into inattentive apathy by then.

And today Condi is going in front of Congress to shore up support for Iraq.

The Condi candidacy has to worry some Republicans due to the rumours about her lack of romantic involvements with men.

I would love to see what would happen in 08 if the US were forced to vote between a Repub. Condi and a Dem. Hilary.

I bet if he stepped down, he would say its for "medical reasons".

Oh, Zendari, why hasn't your crowd started slandering Fitzgerald yet? Can you give me a heads up when you start?

What dirt do you have on him as of this moment?

You're prolly right. He seems to be a high stress person and with a bad heart he can't take much more, so he may actually be telling the truth to a certain extent.

I would love to see what would happen in 08 if the US were forced to vote between a Repub. Condi and a Dem. Hilary.

Dick Morris seems to think it will shake out like this:

Condi takes away the extra women voters that would have flocked to Hill's side eliminating that advantage. The Dems need 90% of the black vote to win any national election. Condi will take anywhere from 1/3 to 1/2 the black vote.

Result: Condi wins.

He also believes that in a head to head debate Condi will wipe the floor with Hill... Especially on foreign policy debate.

No doubt about it. If it really did come down to those 2, Condi would win in a landslide.

That's not surprising. WTF does Hillary know about foreign policy? 😛
