In responce to Cheney coordinated Halliburton Iraq contract: report

The senior official told CNN the e-mail was a typical "heads-up" memo from one government agency to another that "a decision has been made, we're about to announce this contract, and as a courtesy we are alerting the White House of a public announcement. This is a standard practice." The "coordinated action" referred to, the senior administration official said, was "that of publicly announcing the contract decision that has already been made." The heads-up would have been given because of Cheney's previous involvement in the company as chief executive officer, and the anticipated controversy over the noncompetitive bid, the official said.

Of course they are going to deny any role in the deal. We'll just have to wait to see how this unravels. I doubt Cheney had any "bad" role in the deal. There aren't many companies in the U.S. like Haliburton that could provide the supplies, manpower, money, etc. that have been needed so far.

I don?t need some report to tell me Chaney is flexing his mussel for Halliburton.

though it does help that HB is the only american corp for the job.

Is it your opinion then that Cheney lied when he said he had no part in getting H the contract?

Chaney isn't stupid. You may not agree with his politics or methods but the man is not stupid.

Why would he jepordize his postion to help out a company that would not help him financially in any way?

Why would he take an obvious action when it is clear that the democrats would be watching for just that very action?

Just to be clear, you disagree with LMK (and others) that Cheney was "flexing his mussel" for HB?

depends:

Flexing your mussel and doing something politically dangerous, or even illegal, are two different things; Chaney isn't stupid, as etech said.

Call bill o'rilly tell him that the French are evil BAM *emeral live style* no foreigner contracts, kick-it-up-a-notch: HB is the only one in the US that can fill the contract, patriotism demands that we use HB.

The real question: did Chaney do something that political hay can be made out of? I doubt it, but if they did, then good riddance to that man.

If bush wins a second term and Chaney is up for election four years later.. well let me just say: no chance I?d ever vote for him.. I might even vote for a dem over him, depending on how supreme court prospects look.

What exactly would flexing your mussel mean...keeping in mind this little tidbit...

"As vice president, I have absolutely no influence of, involvement of, knowledge of in any way, shape or form of contracts led by the Corps of Engineers or anybody else in the federal government," Cheney told NBC's "Meet the Press" in September, Time said.

LMK, is it your opinion that Cheney lied?

of contracts
You see: changing the American political landscape doesn't change the contracts.

It?s never been to hard to get Americans to say ?forget the French!? and write off global unity;

LMK, is it your opinion that Cheney lied?
In the legal sense, no. In the moral "i know what i did but I?m tricking you" sense, yes.

Cheney might not be stupid, but bush is. I'm sure that Cheney knew about and adivised the president about the halliburton contract. I don't believe that bush would pass up the chance to get adivise about rebuilding Iraq and hiring halliburton with out talking to Cheney when cheney use to run the company.

Why would anyone believe word one out of Cheney's mouth? I can't think of a single person in the administration who better exemplifies the worst in human nature, to say nothing of government.

I'd like to see a poll, say on CNN, of the number of Americans who trust Dick Cheney. I'll bet his numbers are in the 20%-25% range.

The repugs have done nothing but take obvious and transparent unilatteral actions with their war mongering. They don't care what the dems think because they feel they're in charge.

Feeling safer yet?

And oh yeah - didn't the article say that the veep's still getting something like 125k a year deferred from hb?

Yes, I have seen no evidance in any way that Cheney influenced the bidding of that contract. Neither have you or anyone else for that matter.

When the war first ended, just days after, I saw a blurb on the scrolling text on CNN that Halliburton was awarded the contract to handle Iraq's oil. I thought to myself, "There it is." You can conclude what I think "it" is.

Hehe - It looks like we're back to the big bad evil Halliburton issue hoping that it might actually work this time. Well, I got news for you people - it didn't work before, it won't work now, and if this is what you are shifting your focus back too - you must be in a big panic.:p

Absolutely funny. I sooo glad these two threads were the first I read when I got back. I needed a good laugh to remind me to not take you guys seriously.:p

I guarantee you that the swing voters who the democrats need to win this election have NO CLUE who Haliburton is, nor do they care.

When did you become an authority on the swing voters? I'm willing to bet that if Cheney had any role in getting Haliburton the contract these swing voters will be upset. Perhaps they'd like to know why another company couldn't bid on the contract which would possibly lower the cost of this war so far?

But I'm wrong, you're the expert!

Thanks for pointing that out.. you're right.. why? Because I know a lot of these swing voters, and I haved asked a lot of them if they know who Haliburton is.. you know what the most common response is? They think Haliburton is an actor.. they have no clue.

But, go ahead and argue on my expertise, and ignore the fact the American public has not, and does not care about Haliburton.

What bidding is that? Oh, and some might say that this e-mail is considered evidence.

Ok, that was a misstatement on my part. It's so easy to say one thing when typing when you mean something else isn't it. Works the same in e-mails also I supose.

The correct word should have been awarded.

Yes, Gaard, "some" people would.

I respectfully disagree (of course). Since this new bit of evidence has been brought to everyone's attention, it certainly behooves everyone to take a close look at the situation. Fact is, Cheney has misrepresented himself on two occasions: Once when he claimed he had no financial ties to Halliburton and twice (just now) when he claimed he had no influence on contracts awarded to Halliburton.

But please, spin away the lies and show us how Cheney is the "straight shooter" you claim he is.

That's nice but I never did claim Cheney was a "straight shooter" so take your cloth and straw elsewhere;). Also this is mainly just innuendo and rhetoric which didn't play the first time and won't play again no matter how desperate the left is to try to discredit the current Administration.
Keep trying the "Halliburton and Cheney are evil" route though, most people who know Cheney worked for Halliburton also know Halliburton has been doing work for our gov't long before Cheney was VP. So anyway - keep trying to play the same Halliburton card if you wish - it' not going to work just like it didn't before - it's just red-meat for the rabid left;)
