Cheney insults W. Virginia

Well, I wish that I could say that I am surprised....but as most people here won't be...I'm not either.

I'm sure all of us have made similar jokes but we really are supposed to be representing those that we are demeaning.

Talking about his family roots and how he's distantly related to Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, the vice president noted that he had Cheneys on both sides of his family.

"And we don't even live in West Virginia," Cheney quipped.

"You can say those things when you're not running for re-election."

West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin, a Democrat, quickly asked Cheney to apologize.

"I truly cannot believe that any vice president of the United States, regardless of their political affiliation, would make such a derogatory statement about my state or any state for that matter," he said.

On Capitol Hill, Cheney's comment was denounced by both Democrats and Republicans.

"This is exactly the type of stereotyping that we don't need from our elected officials," said Rep. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va. "It's disrespectful, and it's certainly not funny. ... As a proud state, I can say we are disappointed."

Sen. Robert Byrd, D-W.Va., blasted Cheney, saying that for a vice president to openly display "such contempt and astounding ignorance toward his own countrymen" was an insult to all Americans.

"Now that he or the administration he represents no longer needs their vote, Mr. Cheney apparently feels that he is now free to mock and belittle the people of West Virginia," Byrd said.

"The vice president's offhand comment was not meant to hurt anyone," Cheney spokeswoman Lea Anne McBride said later Monday. "On reflection, he concluded that it was an inappropriate attempt at humor that he should not have made. The vice president apologizes to the people of West Virginia for the inappropriate remark."

In a question-and-answer session after giving a speech at the National Press Club, Cheney said also joked that he wouldn't object to a family reunion with Obama, but said he didn't think the candidate would be up for one ? "at least not before November."

"He'd probably be fearful I might whisper in his ear and change his whole view of the Middle East," Cheney said.

He said that when his wife, Lynne, was doing research on a book, she discovered that his grandmother was descended from a man named Richard Cheney. "So I had Cheneys on both sides of the family," he said.

Someone should conduct a study among the states to determine if in fact WV has a higher rate of incest and inbreeding. Then it wouldn't be stereotyping, it'd just be stating a fact.

So!?

Maybe old Darth does have a sense of humor after all? I can't think of Cheney without thinking of Jon Stewart's impersonation. 😛

I think that everyone is missing the point. It isn't that Cheney displayed a sense of humor as prevalent as William Hung's singing ability.

It is that he is the sitting vice president of the United States and he is belittling an entire state's population.

I don't like Cheney, but that was funny as hell. Almost as funny as when he shot his friend in the face 🙂

Was Byrd this upset with the Dems calling their blue collar constituents racist when they didn't vote for Obama?

Someone be sure to remember this the next time when Hussein's camp complains about the repubs hounding him over something trivial.

Ummm... You're acting like McCain made the joke.

But at the end of Obama's 2nd term be sure to remind us all of the Cheney joke if Obama's VP makes one like it.

What a flawed thread hypothesis! Cheney insults the intelligence of every voter in this country and also the entire world. Why say he only insults West Virginia when he is an equal opportunity ahole and serial liar? If Cheney is the braintrust of GWB&co, it puts all of us in the Harry Weatherton position of receiving a shotgun blast to the face.

I think it's pretty funny....but also really stupid and disrespectful for the vice president to do.

Considering I grew up on the West Virginia border and my wife is from there.....uh....

it's still pretty funny. 😛

Oh, and fuck Cheney anyway!

I think it was hilarious. Props to Cheney. If he was silly like this all the time we woulda been a lot better off. Sadly, he wasn't.

Hehehehehe

Probably not because of two important differences...many of the WV voters clearly ARE racist, and Byrd, as a reformed former Klan member, is probably really sensitive to the fact that stupid stuff like that still goes on in his state.

And since when did "blue collar" become the popular way to dismiss acting like an asshole?

"Those assholes aren't voting for Obama 'cause they don't like his skin color, or his middle name, or they think he's a Muslim?"
"No, no, they're 'blue collar' folks."
"Oh, nevermind then."

If Obama said these demeaning remarks, it'd be all over talk radio and Fox news. But he didn't so it isn't.

I find it interesting that the same obama supporters who had no problem making fun of West Virginians are now admonishing Cheney for doing the same
