Cheney approves of gay marriage

So now that even Cheney has seen the light, when is Obama going to chance his bigoted position on gay marriage?

Do you really seriously think Obama is against gay marriage? He needed to get the Christian fundie vote. So like every other politician...he LIED.

homosexuality goes against Barry's Muslim beliefs.

I believe the term used to be "compromising". All politicians of late (red, blue, black or yellow) seem to have forgotten about it.

Do you really believe this? Dick Cheney may support gay marriage privately, but he did nothing for us in his eight years in power. If you notice, he is only responding to a question--he has never proactively made statements in favor of gay rights. And, he never uses the word "marriage," only synonyms and euphemisms.

I believe he was at the very least neutral in the 04 elections eventhough Edwards and Kerry did their best to pin him into a corner by making snide remarks.

I agree that having a lesbian daughter has changed Dick Cheney's perspective, without that, Dick Cheney would probably be one of the biggest gay bashers on the planet.

As for Obama, he has so much on his plate now, that trying to push gay MARRIAGE now would be extremely politically divisive at exactly the wrong time.

As it is, we must face the facts, the best hope for gay marriage will be through the courts, and SCOTUS is where the argument will finally be won. Already many Judges are saying weasel words like gay unions are too much like separate but equal doctrines that fail the sniff test, and if we are going to a allow a full marriage for heterosexuals, then nothing but a full gay marriage will meet the full equality sniff test.

And as Obama tries to get his first SCOTUS pick through, its unlikely to change the balance of SCOTUS much, but if Obama gets to pick a replacement for any in what amounts to the gang of 4 in Roberts, Alito, Scalia, or Thomas, virtually any SCOTUS pick will send the balance of the court decidedly leftward. And then, with the right court case, SCOTUS, at one stroke, could legalize gay marriage nationwide. The religious right can howl to their hearts content, but like the end to slavery, and the female right to vote, there is something simply fair about a full gay marriage that makes it inevitable

Do you mean the same bigoted position every POTUS has had on this issue? Cheney's position would have mattered had he done something about it when he was in office. His 'coming out' now only proves him a fuckwad coward and I'll say the same about Obama if he doesn't follow through during his term.

He said this many years ago. Nothing new.

Does it matter if he didn't fight for it politically at all?

When Obama does something tangible let me know, as of now it looks like he paid just enough attention to the gay rights issue to secure the votes and doesn't actually plan on doing anything.

Frankly, there's more important things at this point, like the economy, health care, and ending the Iraq war. I fully support gay marriage, but first things first.

It would be in Obama's power to at least stop discharges occurring under DADT but he won't even do that. I was always suspicious of his commitment to these issues and I took a lot of crap for that from my peers who were convinced he was the messiah. I really take no joy in being right about this as it affects me directly.

I have to wait for a world without war, economic or political turmoil, and free health care for all before having the audacity to ask for rights that I should already enjoy? I don't think so.

'I think, you know, freedom means freedom for everyone,' says former veep

Didn't expect this one. I wonder what those people who buy the GOP hook, line, and sinker will say to this? Some GOP members/supporters practically have Cheney's balls in their mouths.

Is Cheney a RINO now too?

You should include in your OP that he's in favor of it insofar as the issue is left to state legislatures.

My position is no different. If 50 states approve gay marriage, I've no objection, even though I oppose the practice. What will seriously piss me off is a Roe v. Wade of gay marriage.

You'll get no disagreement on that part, but politics is politics. If Obama moves too aggressively on the gay marriage issue, he'll burn through his political capital and might even lose the 2012 election. You saw how Rove manipulated the fundie bigots in 2004 and if that happens, say goodbye to any hope of any progressive policy.

Big deal if he's for it? I doesn't have a pot to piss in. He's just a Former Want to be old failure. Maybe he has ONE good quality in him and that's not saying much. I hope he tries to run for president in 2012 so it will be an easy win for Obama again.
