I am currently taking grade 12 chemistry in high school, and my teacher has gave us the task of performing an independent project. I am not sure what it is exactly that I want to do yet. The project consists of wanting to find something out (topics like coloured smoke, roman candles, model rockets, and coloured solutions come to mind) and then performing a lab for the topic. Any suggestions would to helpful

thanks

Why don't you take a really common household Chemical and determine what are the components by performing a series of Chemical reactions? That should be pretty cheap and quick/easy :)

do a delayed reaction experiment. a few years ago, i did one involving glycerine and potassium permaganate (pretty sure this was all i needed) in a paper cup. mixed the two, set it on the counter, made a quick presentation and by the time i finished, the cup was in flames. it's simple and the crowd will love it

fry an egg, and describe the process of protein denaturization (sp?) and how its irreversible. You can then give the class a diagram of the protein with the covalent, hydrogen, and peptide bonds. Then once ur done, u can eat the egg.

investigate why stink bombs stink and make it for class :) (yummm sulfur)

Honestly though, it really depends which area of chemistry u are interested in. You could do electrochem and "gold plate" ur keys or metal objects. Synthesize esters and give the class fruit aromas. Show the class how to test for hard water and do a water analysis of the school fountains. U probably done this but show how calories are calculated by a bomb calorimeter.

if you want to coloured flames, burn certain types of metals get the color...ie. magnesium for a bright white, copper for a greenish blue, rust/iron for an orange....

just a few, hope this helps

I couldn't give you legal ideas. But it would be cool when you're giving the presentation that the FBI kicks down the door and tackle you. Well, maybe not for you.
