Murrica, where cheering at a graduation lands one in jail. Seriously this is ridiculous.

Cheering is part of graduation.

Criminal charges? SMH

I'd rather see the school focus on graduation rates/grades than stupid petty bullshit like this. SMH again.

You know, applauding the graduates you know seems like a very normal social behavior and structuring the ceremony in a way that prevents that is likely to cause issues. To further file criminal charges against people over it ... well it's seems like a criminal abuse of our crowded justice system in itself.

A graduation I went to recently timed the ceremony so that each student got ~5 seconds of applause/cheering as they went across the stage; attendees were asked to stop the applause when that student had left the stage so the next student could be called. The result was that every student got an ovation from practically the entire audience that was uniquely theirs, and family/friends got to cheer specifically for their graduate.

So why could this administrator not structure the ceremony in a way that offers everyone a correct way to outlet their natural response to an exciting event?

A huge over reaction on the part of the administrator. At the same time, if he wanted to keep people from cheering and was planning on on being an overreacting douchenozzle, he should have warned them all explicitly ahead of time: "If you cheer loudly, we're going to press charges for disorderly conduct and you could face up to 60 days in jail and a $500 fine."

What happened is a shame.

That said, there is a difference between celebrating one person's graduation and acting disorderly and ruining other people's celebrations.

I've been to too many graduations where a small group of people couldn't grasp the difference between their private celebrations and a public ceremony.

This is full on retarded on the part of school officials. The shoutouts are the least boring part (only non-boring part?) of the graduation ordeal and should be encouraged.

Strange as we become more "tolerant" we criminalize more things that annoy us.

I've been to numerous graduations and, sure, some people go overboard but I never, ever thought they deserved police intervention. If they started a riot then that is completely different, but if it really is just them yelling while their child walked across then I don't think the police need to be bothered by this. I'd imagine a butthurt school administrator is mad that not everyone "respects" their demands.

We had a few that pissed off a lot of people making complete fools of themselves...but they were obviously way too stupid to realize it. That's punishment enough imo.

However, my favorite one was "Hallelujah!"...everybody laughed.

"She never expected Senatobia school district Superintendent Jay Foster, who instructed spectators to hold their cheers until after all students graduated, would file criminal charges against her."

Graduation ceremonies have become progressively worse with each passing year. During my daughter's graduation 2 years ago it was so bad you couldn't hear the a third of the students names being called out. Sad that after all those years of work by the student and the parents/family couldn't hear their child's name being called due to overzealous parents/families making enough noise to drown out the loud speakers.

I'm kind of tired of some of the obnoxious people at graduations - I've heard people with cowbells. Do graduation ceremonies really need more cowbell? And all sorts of other noise makers, loud whistling, and loud shouting.

I think waivers should be signed before going in that stipulate what the punishments will be if you break the clearly defined rules.
Don't like it, don't enter.

Maybe if the ceremonies weren't so boring, "Commencement, a new beginning...".

Just make sure everyone has a stick up their ass and all will be well.

I would agree and thankfully all my kids have graduated. But based on how obnoxious a few were at graduations 7-8 years ago, I dread going to my grandchildren's graduations in the future.

I wonder if the audience cheered at Kim Jong-un's graduation.
I bet they had orderly conduct there!

That's hilarious. I think the idea of arresting someone for yelling at a graduation is absurd (and possibly Unconstitutional), but the image of this obnoxious woman being cuffed after intentionally violating the rule ("I understood as a consequence I was going to be escorted out of the graduation") is pretty amusing.

Bingo! We've raised a bunch of yahoos who have no sense of public decorum.

Yea, I've joined the ranks of old fartdom. Get off my lawn!
